Hey guys,
 If anybody is interested, there is a 1970 Javelin for sale in the Nashville, TN area on Craigs List for $600.  I emailed the guy and he said it ran good but would need a tune up and it had some surface rust.

 Not sure if anybody besides me lives near Nashville, but I thought somebody might want to know.

Tom, I've really been enjoying reading about your new found love of the mighty 196 with twin-stick! There are lots of nay-sayers, but you and I know the truth. I just finished the interior in my Rampart Red 64 440H/Twin-Stick and started driving it again after 4 months of garage life. I too have the "Power-Pac" 2 barrel, and with this light body I can easily scratch the tires at every light. The T-96 is what it is. I finally have a "good" one in the car but that will change soon. You see, I now have in my posession the super rare T-14 OD!!! I hope to have the swap completed before the AMCRC nationals in Seattle this July. Wanna caravan with me and a few buddies from Southern Nevada AMC? :)

It's been said more than once,
"It's alot more fun to drive an underpowered car hard then to drive an overpowered car easy"...
I agree.
I love my new WJ and would not call it overpowered, but it is well powered.
I drive it easy to keep the mileage acceptable.
If I stick my food in it it takes off like no tomorrw. I get to watch the gas gauge drop like a rock too.
I can easily see why that world of soccer moms and tied dads B!**ch about the WJs poor gas mileage and warped rotors... All they need to get good mileage is a knowledge of how they press their feet on those little pedals will either make or break gas mileage and brake rotors.
  Hmmmm... How'd I get over here... I think I'm wandering again..... D@*n I hate these meds....

Anyway, that American sounds like you are enjoying it way to much.
Stop that, life is work, frown, work, frown some more ....
Just kidding.
Sell the Hornet to one of those soccer momses rich kids and drive your Ramblers.

I found some "contemporary" review (maybe the motor trend article) and one 
of the complaints about the car is the small trunk. SMALL!! Hell, you could

Amen! It's a sweet match; the 195.6OHV is very modest, but five forward 
speeds (I thought Frank was slightly exaggerating; but it really is like a 
5-speed in most ways) really helps. It's got to be less than 3000 lbs, but 
instead of wonderin I'll drive it to the local scale (also one of my LPG 
stops for the other Rambler) and MEASURE IT.

I haven't tried that, and probably won't until I've had my sticky fingers 
on the clutch and inside the gearbox!

!! You better not let me know where it is... I might not be able to resist 
temptation... :-) Well that will solve the car's single weakest link, 
period. Very nice!

I have a T150+OD here, plus a vanilla T14. The 150+OD is about 12" longer 
than the T96+OD, and I haven't even eyeballed input shaft.

Will the T14 mate up OK? I better mock up the parts I do have....

I hadn't considered Seattle... but I will look at the calendar. I'm a grad 
student now, and time off means conk out and sleep or, of course, Rambler 
time...! But a road trip would be nice in this thing. I'd have to get more 
confidence in it, but I can always take the Classic.

Hmmm..... maybe it's the 80 or 81 calipers that use a different thread than drum brake wheel cylinders then. I thought it was the 82-83, but I'm sure you've seen a lot more than I have and will take your word for it that they are standard threads. Or maybe I bought a brake hose that was mis-boxed. I bought an 80 something hose for my 79 calipers (assumiing they were pretty much the same) and it wouldn't fit. I might still have that hose somewhere, but not worth digging through parts to find out what year it is!

Hey Frank, If you want to add to your fun facts the threads on the 82-83 caliper are plain old fashioned 3/8"-24!
I bought braided hose and banjos for mine after I added the lowering plates.
Without the lowering plates I managed to use the original 69 style hoses for a while. They were a bit tight up against the upright though, probably not the best way to go.

More important than hose location is bleeder location. The bleeder MUST 
be at the top of the caliper or you'll never be able to bleed the brakes.

Note that it doesn't really matter if the caliper is to the front of the 
wheel or to the rear. Different models and makes have them mounted 
whichever way is convenient. To switch from front to rear (or 
vice-versa) just take one side and move it to the other. AMC normally 
mounted calipers to the rear, but on 58-63 Americans they mount better 
on the front due to clearance issues with the hose. I don't think you 
can mount them to the rear at all, I'm sure I tried that way first 
(years ago!!). I've not converted a 64-69 American, and it's not an 
issue on the big cars -- my 63 Classic has the calipers to the rear.

My 82-83 calipers are front mounted.
I tried to rear mount when I first put them on and the 69 hose would not allow it to work.
I believe they would ift on the rear now that I have the braided lines and banjos.
I have not felt the urge to move them though!
I would prefer them there just because there would be a micro change in weight displacement by putting them behind the front axle. I doubt it would realy do anything, but mentaly it is an improvement!

Could be you got a wrong hose.
I know for a fact my calipers came off an 82.
I bought the Banjos, bolts and sealing washers from Speedway motors they had the best price on them.
I forget the manufacturer, but they are name brand. IIRC they are Earls?
 I was actualy surprised to find out they were 3/8"-24 as I too assumed they would be metric due to the era of manufacture.

rear mounted give more of a "performance" apearance.
so it is said that front callipers are mounted to the
rear, and rear calipers are mounted front, it helps
somehow with the rotational effects of the cintrifugal
weight of the tires or some jiberish along them lines.
but if you look, alot of "sports" cars have them
mounted toward the middle of the cars. like late model
mustangs that i used the brakes from. mounted to the
rear on the front suspension. 

i dunno if any of that mumbo jumbo really affects
anything. sounds pretty technical and all. maybe only
noticeable on an all out race car??? i personally
think they look better mounted toward middle of the
car. rears mounted forward, fronts mounted rearward.
dunno why, i just do....  OK OK OK, its late, and im
rambling again... off to bed.

If the boy is legit let him make arrangements to cash his check or whatever when he gets into town and give you CASH!!!!! Bottom line is no fuss no muss. If he is legit it should not be a problem for him. Most banks are open at least a half a day on Saturday. Case closed and everybody wins. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone here have a pre-64 American with a windshield squirter? Can you 
measure for me how far back from the back of the hood it mounts? I bought a 
setup from feePay and wanna drill the hole in the right place!

I suspect that it's the same for the 58-63 inclusive, but 64-up is all 
different.

I've recently raised my standards as to what kind of oil leaks I'll tolerate, so I'm putting a new valve cover gasket on the American.  So I'm also taking the opportunity to do the head bolt modification for improved oiling in the 232 as described on Matt's mattsoldcars.com website.  It had not been done before and though the car had sat for a couple days it still seemed pretty dry in the valve train when I got the cover off, so I think it needs it.  Basically you pull the third from the rear passenger side head bolt and the second from the rear rocker shaft bolt.  If you look closely at that second rocker shaft pedestal, the casting is different, as it contains the passage for oil to make it's way up to the rocker shaft.  The aforementioned head bolt also passes through that same channel further down reducing it to an easily clogged size.    The "modification" includes cleaning out the pedestal passage with a wire and a blast of air, and grinding down part of the head bolt t
 o provide more room for oil to pass.  I'm going easy on narrowing the bolt as I fear snapping it off when I re-torque it to 80 ft-lbs.  We'll know more tomorrow.

My '68 Rebel SST Convertible (Right Hand Drive) has a wooden dashboard
(although the '67 has a plastic one).  Where the Radio would be on most
AMCs, there's a little door leading to a storage compartment.  There are
also wooden trim pieces across the passenger (it'd be driver's side for you
guys!) side.  A previous owner has revarnised the dash but badly so I'm
fixing to redo the whole thing with new veneer - but I don't know what wood
veneer to get as I don't know what was used in the first place - wish my Dad
was still around, he could probably identify it just by looking - but he
isn't, so on the off-chance - anyone on here know what it would be?
