I'd first suspect that the carburetor goes dry.  The gasoline probably evaporates.
If there is fuel in the carb bowl you can pump a little into the manifold when you go to start it and it will take off right away.   If it is dry there is none for the accelerator pump to pump into the manifold.  The starter cranking can't seem to run the fuel pump well enough to pump some fuel into the carb.  When you prime it a little by pouring a little into the carb throat the engine will start and then is spinning good enough to refill the carb bowl. 

This is more of a problem in warmer weather as the gas will evaporate faster.  This is helped with a thicker gasket placed in between the carb and manifold as it will insulated the carb from the hot manifold.
