You'll need the V8 torque tube and rear to go with it... pretty much you're 
forced to switch the entire driveline, fan to rear wheels...

NAPA 660-1000 is the correct repair kit. It fits 74 to 92 Volvos too.

It's a thermostatic bulb that maintains the heat at a constant air 
temperature. It's true that the lever is not calibrated in any way, but the 
idea is that if you set a nice temperature the thermo bulb will adjust water 
flow to keep it constant. 

On my Hornet, I tap and adjust the heat lever to get it just a bit warm, but 
the temperature varies all over the place when I get on the freeway because 
the increased airflow makes the temperature drop (constant small water flow, 
more air, lower temperature).

It's an added-cost thing that got dropped as AMC cheapened up later...
