I'd want to do a 2.5 AMC with 5 speed and maybe get it from an '91-95 or so 
for the better breathing and simpler EFI.

The little Ford 170/200/250 engine WILL fit an early American --
I've seen it! That's the only other I-6 I know of that will. All
others that would be good swap choices won't. Something older
like a Stude six might fit, but there's nop point in the swap
(no more power or reliability).
