Re: [Amc-list] 9 in Ford Rear Axle information for potential AMC swaps

" From: "John Elle" <johnelle@xxxxxxxxx>
"
" Going through information that I have stashed here and there the
" following
" FORD inch Axle information surfaced. Maybe some one can find it
" useful.

great detail, but confusing in places... here it is again, sorted by
year:

" 9" rear axle lengths, Note; Some are not 9"
"
" 57-59 Ranchero and station wagon 57.25 iches (narrowest 9" housing)
" 57-59 Ranchero and station wagon rears, 57.25 inches
" 64 Falcon 58 inches
" 65-66 Mustang 57.25 inches
" 66-77 Bronco 58 inches but has 5-on-5 1/2 inch diameter bolt circle
" 66-77 Bronco 9", 58 inches
" 67 Cougar 60 inches
" 67 Fairlane 63.50 inches (coil springs)
" 67-70 Mustang 59.25 inches
" 67-71 Comet, Cougar, Mustang, Fairlane, 59.25 inches
" 67-71 Comets, Cougars, Fairlanes 59.25 inches
" 67-73 Mustang, Torino, Ranchero, Fairlane 9" 59.25 inches to 61.25 inches
" 67-73 Torinos, Rancheros, Fairlanes 59.25 inches or 61.25 inches
" 71-73 Mustang 61.25 inches
" 71-73 Mustang, 61.25 inches
" 72 Ford Van 3/4 ton 68 inches
" 73-86 65.25 inches
" 74 Maverick 8" 56.50 inches
" 75 Mustang II 8" 57.00 inches
" 77-81 Granada/Versailles, 58 inches
" 77-81 Versailles 58.50 inches

the versailles can't be both 58" and 58.5"! and btw the 9" rear -
with big vented disks - was available but rare on granadas and
monarchs, but standard on versailles. big fomoco cars of the mid '70s
also had these disks on a coil sprung rear with 5x5" lugs.

the '65-6 mustang 9" should also be findable on '63-5 fairlanes. both
were pulled off the '61-5 falcon platform and afaik have identical
track f/r.

and i think the falcon width is wrong for '64, and the fairlane for
'67, though they make sense for certain later years.

" How to recognize 9" housing centres
"
" []
" 63-77 Lincoln, LTD, Thunderbirds had 9.375 inch centers, housings were
" cut away at the gasket surface for ring gear clearance, one curved rib
" at the front top portion of differential, strong but no gears

also many had 5x5" lugs. oem gears were 2.50, 2.75, 3.00, 3.25, 3.50,
and 4.09 used 1 year on pickups. afaik all are 31 spline.

here's what i have, culled from car and driver annual issues. this
data is all track and not housing width - axles aren't even identified
- but it's still suggestive.
