Re: [Amc-list] the 195.6 OHV engine

I'm with you Tom -- it wouldn't take much to double the HP of a 195.6 and I'm pretty sure it would take it. A remote mount turbo might even be the ticket.

I have Datson's books and permission to reprint if I want. I never have, partially because a lot of the info is speculative, and partially because I have most of the verifiable info from other sources. If the articles had been indexed the books would be much more valuable. The only thing you can do is use a sticky pad for tabs (with short notes) as you read, "indexing" as you go. Time consuming, but the only way to make the books usable for ready reference.

The T-96J was the "heavy duty" version. It had a slightly larger input shaft and front bearing, and was made with harder shafts. AMC used it in 70-72 or 73 behind 1V 232s in Gremlins and Hornets. It seemed to work okay. I used a rebuilt one behind a stock 4.0L for a while. The synchro lasted only a couple hundred miles. Then it was carefully time shifts and double clutch to down shift. So I don't think a T-96 would last long behind a 195.6 w/turbo. The 177 hp 4.0L (87 model) would be like a 250 hp 60s engine (difference between net and gross HP ratings).

Any 72 or earlier six bell will bolt to a 195.6. Some of the later six cylinder trannys will fit, but not on a T-96 bell.
