Re: [Amc-list] switch identification help

Joe Fulton answered - it's the OD kick-down switch. If you no longer have the OD trans simply remove it and the wiring. If you do, there is a short in the switch or the solenoid. There is a set of contact points in the solenoid that is grounded (closed) when the OD is engaged. When the switch is closed the coil is grounded out through those points. The OD kick-down switch is supposed to "snap" open as soon as it closes and reset when it comes back up -- sort of a ratchet action.

You can CAREFULLY pry it apart and clean the contacts, and make sure everything is clean and moving easily. It's possible the "snap action" mechanism is damaged or worn out, but it's most likely just stuck from age. be careful when taking the switch apart. I know of no diagrams for the internals of the switch -- if something falls out and you can't tell where it was you're stuck! I've done it, but that was a long time ago. The contacts in the solenoid are easy -- just unscrew the two nuts and remove the cover on the solenoid. You'll see the contact points.

We are working on a 62 Rambler Classic with a 196 OHV engine. There is a switch
mounted right by the carb and when you accelerate a tab on the throttle linkage
activates that switch. it has (I think) 4 wires going to it. One of those wires
was connected to the + side on the coil. We were not getting any spark and when
we disconnected that wire from the coil we started getting spark.

What is the purpose of this switch and is it supposed to be connected to the + side of the coil? Thanks.
