[Amc-list] changing Master cylinders from Wagner to Bendix

Jay, since this is a driver and not a 100% restored car, change the MC.
It makes no difference that the front and rear brake outlets are
switched, you can change them if you want to. The Wagner MC uses a large
nut and small tube on one of the reservoirs to prevent switching them.
You can't find that any more and it's hard to find adapters. I
disconnected the line at the junction block and ran a new one up to my
Bendix MC. You can do that for both lines -- a lot neater than adapters.
Just make sure the Bendix MC has the same bore as the Wagner. I'm pretty
certain the Wagner MCs

The pushrod could be a problem. You can make one from a long eye bolt
from the hardware store. You need a 5/16" eye bolts about 6-8" long.
You'll likely have to cut it, and may need a washer on the pedal bolt.
As long as you don't have a brake light switch that attaches to the
rod/bolt like new vehicles that will work fine. You might want to pick
up a couple bolts though. If you cut it to short you won't have enough
brakes, and if you cut it to long the brake pedal will be too high.
Better to cut a little long then take off a little at a time until it's
right. That will take some trial and error time, but better safe than
sorry!

I removed the Wagner M/C from my 66 American and it looks pretty rough.
I
may be able to save it, but I have a new Bendix unit in my "spares" and
I
believe I can make it work by using adapters in the front and rear ports
(the Bendix ones are next size up from Wagner ports). I don't know how
critical the fact that the rear port on the Wagner is in the rear and
front
brake port is in the front. The Bendix is just reversed, I believe.
Also I
may need a Bendix "push-rod" or whatever it is called as the two units
don't
use the same length rods which connect to the brake pedal. I have manual
brakes.

The Wagner unit is obsolete and next impossible to obtain even though I
was
able to get a rebuild kit from RockAuto thanks to Matt Haas.

What should I do?
