another good possibility occurs to me - the saginaw 605 vega ps box.
this is smaller than the regular sag 750 and has a -manual- box bolt
pattern and iirc pitman arm taper.  sounds to me like it was designed
to be a direct swap for manual gear...  it's very popular in the old
chevies etc crowds, to the point you can get new 'built' gears.
