These are supposed to be the mother of all header gaskets and be able to
work on anything solutions. (or so they claim)

Fred is having some header problems, I have not had much luck with any
type of headers thru the years so possibly some of you can help out this
fellow before it gets to 140 degrees below zero up there. Be sure to
copy your reply to either Bar'ts group here or the amc-list and also to
Fred who would appreaite it and thanks in advance to all who might
reply.

Subject: Eddie, I need header help!

Dear Eddie,

I put a new set of Hooker headers on my 69 AMX/390 and I have an exhaust
leak on the passenger side rear cylinder. I have tried everything.
Hooker even sent me another pair of headers. I also tried Mr. Gasket
gaskets and it is better but still leaking. I can't tighten them any
tighter. I ran the engine until it gets hot and tighten and still it
leaks. I have tightened the bolts in various sequences and this does not
help. Now I have doubled the gaskets on the passenger side, and it is
better, but still leaking. I am lost! Any help would be appreciated.

A: Frank must be a little distracted this AM. I'm sure he meant FILL
plug in
the cover of the Model 15. The Model 20's fill plug changed design
several
times (same thread AFAIK) from square drive external to square drive
internal (use a ratchet or extension of the correct size) to allen (hex)

internal to torx internal (on the only Model 20 in a '90 Grand Wagoneer
I
ever saw)

I thought it might be a tubular shaft with no center bearing!
The solid
and two piece ones do have a center bearing -- at least I'm
pretty sure
the two piece does (know for a fact the solid does). It's rare
that the
center bearing goes out since it's protected from the elements.

You'll have to pull an axle and get the number off the outer
bearing.
Then match the number. The chain stores MIGHT have a bearing
number
cross reference, but a bearing and drive supply WILL (look in
yellow
pages under bearings and drives). If there are no bearing and
drive
supplies in Lawton KS try a NAPA. They deal with a lot of
industrial
customers and are more likely to be able to do something for
you.

I'm reasonably sure you have an AMC 15. It will have the drain
plug in
the rear cover. An AMC 20 has no plug in the cover -- it's in
the front
of the housing center section.

HMM this month features a 1968-1970 AMX Buyers Guide
written by Daniel Strohl. The featured car is a
Mossport Green 70 AMX from Littleton, C0 with a green
corduroy interior.

Why a Mossport Green with green interior car was used
I don't know. I have a Mossport Green with green
vinyl interior Mark Donohue Javelin and that interior
just doesn't do it for me, so don't flame me.

I would say yes, but that's because I have complete ones (100% complete

ok, my drain plug is in the rear cover. but what about
the "spicer" axles that i keep gettin told it should
be from the parts stores? none, i mean NONE of the
parts stores here, or online show amc 15. either
spicer 27A, or spicer 53.

A: I forgot to check while at work, but the Spicer 53 is nearly the same
as
a Dana 60 (definitely size wise as they share covers) As for the 27A,
unless
it uses a different cover from Dana 27, then it's not the same as a
Model
15.

Called up Rockauto about this stuff. Same mistakes listed on their site
so I
was patched through to their techie dude. He started in telling me they
had
it right and I told him to find the nearest Jeep in their parking lot
(he
did it on his cell phone) and look at the cover and look at NAPA number
NGA
P27801

Rockauto's currently listed stuff
Dana 53 cover gasket
http://info.rockauto.com/Fel-Pro/Detail.html?RDS12758.gif

Dana 27AR cover gasket
http://info.rockauto.com/Fel-Pro/Detail.html?RDS55015.gif

Correct stuff

Model 15/D35 gasket NGA (line code) P27801 (part #)
http://partimages2.genpt.com/partimages/186697.jpg

Model 20 gasket NGA P37830
http://partimages2.genpt.com/partimages/236735.jpg

are they the same thing,
just a different name for them maybe? if it actually
is the amc 15, how hard would it maybe be to adapt
dana 35 one piece, none c clip axle shafts, and maybe
later model drum brakes, that parts are more availible
and cheaper for, or did the 35 come with disk brakes
that might fit before they went to the mopar flange?

A: The D35 didn't come with disc brakes till '94 in the Grand Cherokee
(late
'93 actually but parts stores don't list them)

my mysteryous noise i thought was a bearing is
noticeably quieter now. i guess maybe it was all the
gunk in the tranny.

they closed post today case we got about 2" of snow.
ft sill gets a little dusting of snow, and post is
closed. now i got all day, and no idea what im going
to do...

dave stohler

A: In my case, I own a Jeep so I always have something to do! (Drive it
or
fix it when I have a dry place to work with)

I wrote this plaintive missive to the techies at my company. Hopefully
it
won't bounce back like all other tries online and by phone.

Who can I contact with info on missing part numbers/incorrect listings
for
axles and pieces thereof online and in stores? I'm concerned with the
paucity of information and scarcity of ways to cure the problem. What
good
is a store full of parts when you try to look them up in a computer and
get
the message "Look in the NAPA catalog for a listing" when there are how
many
catalogs?
I work for NAPA in the Bellevue, WA store and I get probably a dozen
calls a week from people in other stores looking for stuff that isn't
listed
or incorrectly identified. (specifically dealing with AMC/Jeep stuff but
I
have parts employment experience with Ford and repairing other makes as
well
from being a mechanic for nearly 30 years)
When I try to use the in store discrepancy report system, I often get

error messages which is an incomplete send (same thing happened when I
tried
just now with the online report from home) and often ends up in a lost
$ale
for me and many others. I don't have the time to look everything up when
I
have up to 10 customers in front of me so a quicker discrepancy
reporting
system, ie: a page link with incorrect or missing part space where it
can be
entered would help considerably.
Prime example: American Motors and Jeep have been using Dana 35 aka
Model
15 axles since the '60s and maybe before that, yet there is no listing.
I
have to get on an internet capable computer (which is only the manager's

machine and more often than not busy) to search the competition's site
(Rockauto.com for searching and cskauto.com/Partsamerica where I used to

work and I used to have a direct pipeline to the website techs, largely
due
to many of them being Jeepnuts too) to get their number then use our
cross
reference to get our part number to sell the customer the correct part.
Half
the time I can't even access our own website due to dialup connection
errors
and the old books have wandered away from our shelves.

In this case (what inspired this extraordinarily long email out of
frustration), the correct part number for the Model 15/Dana Spicer 35C
diff
is NGA P27801 and used from the '60s till now (in smaller Jeeps and most

AMCs).

Remember: A customer who is told we don't have a part or is sold the
incorrect part becomes far more likely to shop elsewhere in the future.

The greybeards like myself won't be around forever so it would be wise
to
get the info now while you still can.

I rest my case. Perhaps this should've been called "Diary of a mad
Partsman"!

The Mexican 282 I had would've LOVED an O/D with the 2.72 gears and

2.73 might be a bit much for a three speed 195.6 to pull
starting off. I
don't recall what the stock rear gearing was, will have to
check. A four
or five speed with a lower first would work well, but 2.73
wouldn't do
with an OD. My 63 American with auto had 3.15 gears stock, 3.31
as the
performance gears (which I had). A 3.08 might be a better
choice,
depending on the first gear ratio in the T-14.

yeah, Frank's right. Station wagons came with 3.31, and even
with a 232, a lot more guts than the 195.6, it's not exactly
overgeared. (Putting 225/75-R15's on didn't help.) To be blunt
it's a slow car! The wagons are heavier than the see-dans,
but not by more than 200 - 300 lbs.

Metoo. The work is in torque tube to open conversion; swapping
axles after that is EASY, especially if you've unfrozen rear
brake lines and all that annoying crap. When I was autocrossing
I used to swap a rear axle in an hour or less.
