I hardly know anything about the 196, though I'm enamored with
the aluminum one.

But I do know that the aluminum 196 uses the same lifters and some
other valvetrain parts as the 232, so possibly the changes were
to accomodate a unified parts bin. Might be worth checking if
the late iron 196 cam bearings etc are similar to the 232 (maybe
differnt oil holes etc).
