My buddy Brian (with the '82 Spirit) needs rear brakes, so we will be
robbing the backing plates and drums from the spare D35 (they are 10" He
has
the expen$ive 9") I have, unless it's the correct width to fit? Anyone?

I dunno what the fit interchange is 'tween the 20 and 15 axle with the
10 and 9 inch brakes but----my ' 80  AMX which is an I-6 car should have
the model 15 rear axle and although I have not tried to verify that it
does or not the literature for the thing says the rear gear is a value
that was only offered on the 15 but it does have finned 10 inch brakes
which were standard on the model 20 axle (and also dogon near 90%
cheaper as far as the drum goes.) When I go to buy parts for it I have
to specify 1980 AMC AMX in order to get the right parts for the car. 
I also have a micro fiche and a reader to read it with but the
microfiche is middle '80s or so. I will take the time to night to get it
out and see if something like that is listed in the parts section. If I
find something I will drop it on to the files some time tonight or
tomorrow. 
 
My back is a bit sore now, some Ditz in an Infinity SUV (Gawd I hate
that term) and her white poodle ran into the back of my town and country
at an intersection tonight. Says she didn't see it. 
As I was not overly happy about the situation I questioned what she
thought that big purple thing was directly in front of her windshield. I
don't thing she like the question.

A: People make waaaay too much of these weasel... uhh, I mean diesel powered 
rigs. They cost more to maintain than a regular car. Nope. Not for me! My 
'73 J4000 will do till I can flatdeck it (I'd really like a M715 frame with 
12' bed instead. Won't be as happy with a GM 2 ton frame and the drivetrain 
from my J4000 with the GM 2 ton upgraded axles)
   If that doesn't pan out, my wife's Granpa and Uncle still have the Stude 
tow truck waiting for me to get it running again (been sitting up in a barn 
for nearly 25 years in Scott county, WV)

afaik the housing ends are completely different.  the drums are the
same but the backing plates are not.

afaik only i6 matadors and ambassadors got amc20 axles.  all other
sixes got amc15s.  your spirit should, and these would be the backing
plates brian needs.

A: My stroker in the '84 J10 will do @20 mpg with LPG at $1.50 a gallon. 
That equals @ 25 mpg on gasoline price wise. Not terribly fond of the smell 
of oil burners. I don't think the QT would stand up to a weasel either. I 
stretched the #@$* out of the old chain (with the O/D part time kit) 
haulling stuff. Even a NP208 may be a bit weak for my plans (later I can do 
a Dodge NP205 to the 727 lockup trans I have. Hoping to get the 1st and 2nd 
lower gear sets with a slightly high stall and lockup at 55 mph with an 
electric lock out for when I'm towing.
   The Hummer got a Chev TH400 or 700R4 trans (and that's TOOO Chevy for my 
liking too! Just the thought of even a Chev 2 ton frame for my planned 4x4 
tow and recovery truck doesn't make me happy)
   The '73 J4000 with TH400 O/D QT, 3.73 gears and 33" tires nets me @ 17mpg 
now. It'll pull a house down if I can attach it right and the tcase chain 
doesn't slip!

another possibility for more mileage, if you have a j with a
th400, is
swap the amc motor for a gm 6.2/6.5 diesel.  it's the motor in
the
hummer...  my friend the engine man drives a 4wd diesel suburban
and
gets in the 20s.

I just installed a T-96 OD TT from a 63 Classic into my 64 American NON-TT. 
I used the same drive shaft. All you have to do is swap the tail shaft 
housings. Same rear seal, same spline, total no-brainer. I am told that the 
T-14 OD is exactly the same length overall as the T-96 OD. Go to the AMC 
forum.NET and look through the Transmission postings for this swap. I think 
there may be a T-14 OD in Colorado. More than one person replied saying 
there was one available. This is your easiest swap. Don't buy a T-96. 
They're crap. I just put my 4th one in 12 months. Let us know how you make 
out!

List, 
I have a Jeep parts micro-fishe for 1981 - 1983 and a reader that will
read it. That is the hard part. 
I have used these fishe for various research bits and pieces of info
where I knew what the correlation was between the Jeep call out and the
same part used on a car. But on the whole unless you have further
information trying to cross reference parts are almost impossible. 
What I can not do is see if part A that fits a Jeep 2 wheel drive etc.
will also fit a Spirit. The information on the parts description is not
broad enough to try to figure it out. So-----
If in looking up these parts can help some one on making jeep parts fit
a Spirit and I can help drop me a note. By the same token, being as I
have a fiche reader maybe some one who has fiche with no way to read
them might be interested in selling those fiche.

i've heard that just as some early xjs came with amc15 axles,

the xj axle is wider than the usual hornet/concord one, but both
xjs
and eagles use those deep-offset wheels.

Good Morning,

  Trucks... why I have one.

  My wife and I had two small cars for quite some time before buying a 
truck in 2003.  We had an '89 Corolla All-Trac sedan and '90 Protege 
sedan in Maine.  Brought 'em to Virginia where the Corolla was traded 
(at 176k) for a '96 Tercel sedan.  We bought a Chinese folding cargo 
trailer that with the stakes was 4'x8'x2+'.  I towed this trailer behind 
my Protege for a between two and three years until buying a new '01 
Saturn SL2.  I then towed the trailer behind it until buying the truck - 
an '03 S10 4WD Crew Cab.  I don't haul a lot of "stuff" although at 
times I _do_ haul things I wouldn't want inside.  The small 4' bed hauls 
probably 90 to 95% of what I need and for the other 5-10% I have my 
trusty rusty super-special Chinese trailer.  I also use it when we go 
camping to tow our small pop-up camper.  Other than that, my wife uses 
it to go back and forth to work (a whopping 5-6 miles round trip).  The 
truck gets a (poor) 18 to _maybe_ 19 MPG highway.  At my previous job I 
had a company van (a Dodge Grand Caravan with the nifty Stow 'n Go 
seats) that got 22 MPG with the 3.3l V6.  I sold my Saturn during this 
time and took some of the cash to buy my Eagle as I wanted a second 
non-work-owned vehicle that was a bit more practical than the SL2.  Two 
car seats and some stuff filled it up REAL fast.  If my new job was 
around town here (haha - like THAT'll happen) I'd have just drove around 
the Eagle and not bought another Saturn - this time an LW300.

  Basically I use my truck halfway (by what seems to be what most here 
use a truck for) like a truck.  Judging by the fuel economy it gets with 
the 4.3l V6, I could've had a V8!  The only problem with a (insert your 
favorite brand here) full-size pickup is that I haven't much space to 
park as it is... at the end of my drive there are bushes on either side 
meaning a full-size wouldn't be able to open the doors there!  Ack.  If 
I get a larger camper, then I'll get a larger truck that my wife will 
drive around and to work as she doesn't drive much.  I'll drive the 
smaller somewhat more fuel-efficient car on my 70-mile round-trip 
commute.  Of course when I've done some more work to the Eagle...
