You're not bugging us, that's what we're here for -- answering questions and helping AMC/Rambler people!!

The hub is cast steel, but not hardened. It has no splines in it (a new one doesn't), but has a keyway. The axle is hardened steel with shallow splines. When a new hub is installed the axle "digs into" the smooth inside of the hub and creates shallow splines in the hub. The end of the axle is tapered and the hole in the hub tapered ot match. If the hub is ever removed it must go back in the same position on the same axle, that's why the keyway. The key really doesn't keep the hub from spinning, those fine splines and the torque of the nut on the end do.

There is not re-torque interval for the axle nut, but it should be loosened then torqued back down every 10-15 years. It should be torqued at 250-300 lb/ft. The TSM states 250, but 300 will be fine. More than 300 won't help, and may hurt if a lot more due to added stress on the end of the axle. I take the car to a big truck, construction equipment, or farm tractor shop with the hubcaps or wheel centers off so they can see the nut. It's no big deal for them to loosen it a bit then tighten back up. Most small auto shops can't reliably torque over 200 lb/ft -- a 3/4" drive torque wrench is really needed. Most front wheel drive axles have a nut holding the hub on that should be torqued to around 200 lb/ft, and 200-250 is the limit for 1/2" torque wrenches. Torque isn't very accurate at the beginning and end of a wrench's range.

The nut probably worked loose with age or the end of the axle stretched a bit (which would in effect loosen the nut) over the years. It's a 60, "only" 46 years old!! You can't use the old hub, it won't tighten back on the axle. Finding a new hub is going to be difficult and may be expensive if you do. You best bet is to get the axle and hub from a parts car. The hub has to come off to get the brake backing plate off and change the seal. I usually pull the axles and take them to a machine shop so they can press the hubs off. Tightening the nuts as much as you can is fine for the initial drive to the truck shop, just take it a bit easy. Your machine shop might be able to tighten the nuts to 250 lb/ft though. If they work on heavy equipment as well as cars they likely can. You may as well change the outer axle bearings and seals while you have the hub off, and may as well do the other side as well. The hub has to come off for those procedures anyway.

The axle/hub from any 58-62 Rambler Six or Classic six cylinder should work. V-8 models used a heavier rear axle assembly (Model 20 in V-8, yours is a Model 15 axle). Or you can change the entire axle assembly out if you can find one locally.

While visiting YouTube.com once again to explore, I
found several interesting videos, one an old 1955
commercial by Jiminey Cricket on the Nash, has some
Nash Healey footage. Pretty cool old commercial!
Another video is of a short test drive of a '27? Nash,
but all you see is the hood. Here's the links to the
'55 Nash commercial :

Video of 1955 nash , with Nash Healey mentioned,
Jiminey Cricket narrating. Cool!

I forgot to copy the link from the other, but the
Poster name is Classicdriver, so you should be able to
search on that name and find it. Enjoy!

I appreciate an Intellect that brings 'points' to conversations
AMC - tests ones' commitment - using a 400 WATT HID lamp
on occasion.........but hey.!

"Our Day in The Sun" - the decline of AMC Enthusiasts -
- historically the preserve of the fiscally challenged.

*quotes*

"I last -drove- one of my AMCs in 1994; I last -saw- my AMCs in 2004;
I'm
running on memories and hopes and dreams: not even on gas fumes."

A '72 Buick Estate Wagon with over three times the miles on my '71
Ambassador recently sold for $16,500; the AMC owls would screech at
$12,000, they'd hoot at $9,000, and they'd peck at a $6,000 asking.

Who will ever fly with such a willful flock of fickle-billed birds?

Who will wrap arms with the make that makes its mark as the marque
everyone loves to laugh at because its cars and its collectors are,
well,
so darn weird?

Can't get along with others, can't get along amongst
themselves, can't get no respect, -

 can't get over it.

Huh?

Why doesn't AMC look at the other weird ones, among them A-C-D,
Packard, Studebaker, and, yes, Edsel (which looked at Packard, but
that's another very interesting --- albeit not to you probably ---

AMC-related history) that get more attention, respect, value,
prices, publication, etc. than does AMC?

Why doesn't AMC see that they even have archives and museums;
not mom-and-pop or some-guy's-garages: permanent professional places
to
be?

An 'Enthusiasm' of gratuitous condolences mis ami ~!

well......... i 4 - 1 don't want AMCs commanding stupid figures at
the Barrett-Jackson Auctions > ....., I enjoy AMC
in a better light, on the street , unconcerned, thanks - not - as an
I'nvestment' ....and I can do without the s'tupid money' mentality
looking to buy us out - cheap - then changing the game.

I want Stocks & Futures to appreciate > not AMC rides ,.. since
the buy in price might become as a '56 Caribbean became ......
and the Stocks might not mature -

Cars then > AMCs' > become
only for the wealthy to play with - bragging rites for 'well monied
players -

Enthusiasts ?

I NEVER
see a Packard on the streets - haven't in decades - one
of my childhood 'First Loves' - a Packard Hawk..... I'll never be
able to own any of these,....
so I own a Packard Hawk 'Pelt' .............> the Trademark Hood and
Nose Cone - "get over it" you say........the...."inequalities of
life"............ Hey...... bite me..... got a 'Lite' ?.

I still see AMCs' in my town - owned by 'normal people' -
saw a near perfect Eagle Wagon -
roll'd thru the lites last week - and again, I was struck by how
'clean' the lines are - even for a wagon - kinda' nifty - would be
better as a 3dr. tho - save those extra 2dr. Sedan Doors & pillars
folks !

Somewhere in Town is an all Silver
2dr. Eagle Sedan with padded roof & Burgundy highlights I want - but
they use it for Winter Driving on Salted Roads since it is a 'Safe
Cheap Car'......... I SHOULD stock up
on some Eagle sheet-metal for that 'Future'......... it'll need it,
but prices being what they are - I'd rather eat.

I would like to be able to buy another AMC on a Beer Pocket-Book
expense account -
not to be faced with 'fiscal embarrassments when looking
at a Spirit Sedan > bad enough that The Machine is in stupid
price territory > I like the paint jobs - but they are a sex'd up
Ambassador stripper....... ain't they ?,...the AMX and Javelins
are $6,000.00 K in rrrotted shapes........ whew...... where's the
skunk !

I'm content the Gremlin continues to be t'hat weird'
car the 'Hippies' liked > use to the keep the price within sane -
but
not by much, parameters - and that too is sadly changing .

I'd like to buy a hood for $25.00 > not the $125.00
or the $150.00 they are going for now...... wtf? !

I had one s'eller' screw me over on a set of AMX / Hornet flares,
already paid for by me> $145.00 ...because he saw an ad for
$340.00 that sold.........so he resold mine ! - and never called
to inform me..........

..cherished 'Price Appreciation' breeds > "Pride of Ownership" and
bung-holes.

Measuring the AMC camp against Pierce Arrows - Packards - Dusenberg
on-line LIsts > us here can still afford an AMC, instead of being
'closed out' - by bid up pricing
via a 'pay anything' no sweat mentality - this is not my cup of
treacle Commander ! I headed for the 'Romulin Territory' long ago to
Party!.......... and so I am ....... here........ in the AMC camp.

Am I a Purist ? .... Appreciate 'Pole Dancers' much ?

Sure ........- watching perfectly restored cars roll across the
Podium -
bringing out the wealthy retired contractors 'pocket knot' still
makes me laugh - many of those Beautiful cars - I wouldn't have
bought used on a car lot back when $2,500.00 would pull down an SS-
396 Chevelle - orange peel and all Originalis...with YOUR money
...Hemi Roadrunner stripper this !
can't get them to run right any of the time off a track - so wtf!

396 street Camaros were punishing them with: 'Regularity' .....
ahh...a 360 Gremlin would walk it in the quarter > ' X - Lax '>.. but
those all vynal Police Dept. seatings and MoPar gennie 'Doggie-
Dishes' ..!......... [..... erRRP..... ]... leave it in the car
port.

....the disease of over priced - as a status measure of worth value
is not the plateau I long and pray for the AMC camp sufferings
to attain - nor is it a measure of the success of AMC nor
(aficionados)......... "but I ain't blind......... and I don't like
what I think i see"..........takin' it TOO the streets......"3dog
night.

AM I Heppy with my undervalued Kammback series50 -?

 I bought in for >]not
$25,000.00 ] just
@ $550.00
> no rust AND
after a 10 year search & wait ? youbetcha'.

It ain't that RWB pain scheme ...... nah nah....
don't get me wrong ........ I like 'em just fine.

but I see Kammbacks for $2,500.00 > $4,500.00 >$6,5000.00 - am I
thrilled ? .. .......not in the least, as this indicates > I won't be
buying another any time soon.

The modern day 'Classic Car' price Escalade-tion is an illness -
it started with
'Drug Monies' laundering - but that is another digression at
another time. These days - who knows - and the prices ARE
going up.

When AMCs finally achieve their 'Place in The Sun ', amongst the 3
mother' 'Big-Big Money' cars > I'm gone baby > in my $550.00 Kammback
with the
450ponies blown GM M'erlin', snoozing' in it's all Alloy DOHC
$1K buy in splendor........ blown and 'Gone'.

And my guess is > most everyone else on The List too > and a goodly
segment of the AMCforum.com contingency that do not MEET the
'criteria' for u'pscale pricing ownership' ....either........ will be > 'Gone' :

........... uhh.. ......define : 'Gone' ?

Uh-huh -> "Wonnerful" that the car bought back when is now
up a few 'Murry the Ks' more 'Worthy' - o0oh ....celebration -
shoulder to shoulder chums..........sharing in the Big Price
Inflation 'Get Over' sellings -
..... right ? but.......... once sold......... these people are
OUT...... fallen from grace ....their AMC 401K plan sold.. as most
can't afford another now pricey 'Classic Status Car'....... . .......
Adios poor boy ?.....'Members Only' ?. thought we were friends
!?.......former AMC owner - .meet bums rush to the Renault Camp.....
.

'AMC Car Guys' historically have been 'pocket-change' artisans - junk
yard
scroungers - modifiers - underdog restorers - interested parties with
a love of 'the ride' craft> 'The Little Car' heart throb
sectarians........so just where DO we fit - in this new Grand Scheme
of Pricey AMC Marque Recognition status grail attainment?

we don't.

_somewhere, among the 'Frequent Flyer Miles', does one lose touch
with the sensuality of their love souls chozen extremities, -
succumbed to callous comparitives - the 'who paid more' costs more'
race for a Snifters 'Bottle of Worth'?, W'intering a Marina Del Ray
demntia - 'Not Worthy Enough' until YOU're in priced out Comradeship -
 again ?..... streeting a WHAT ?

Keeping AMC aPART from the 'Others' - that is where it all began,
and the Bliss of where we should collectively choose to remain.

All in favor - ...raise your ' Mouse .....' ;)
