Change or test your crank sensor.

My bets is that it is toast...

I agree. Very common failure. Annoyingly expensive little part. Also somewhat irritating to replace. Located at approx 10 o'clock (looking from the rear) of the trans bell.

Last thursday in the rain as I pulled up in front of my friends shop and
started to roll the drivers door window the the roller in the window
regulator broke. I just happen to have a complete spare door in my
garage. The door on the car has some long horizontal creases in it and
one long vertical crease in the front of the door where the former owner
spring the door into the front fender. Also on the top of the door where
the mirror screws into the door there is a small reinforcement plate
spot welded on the inside of the door for support and for more heft for
the mirror screws. The outer skin is rusted through.
The spare door I have is undamaged and the same color of the car. Other
than polishing it out and painting the inside panels where the door
panel goes and swapping the felt track and the door fuzzes, locks, door
handles and mirror I will have a perfectly original door. Now to also
swap the hood for the undamaged one in my garage which is also the same
color of the car. Thanks Davis.

" From: Matt Haas <mhaas@xxxxxxx>
"
"
" The sweet spot for gas mileage depends on the engine and what the terrain
" is like around you. Smaller engines need more RPM but an AMC six or V8
" (which make a lot of torque at low RPM) should be quite happy around 2,000
" RPM at 65 MPH. If it's flat, you can get by with fewer RPM but you'd need
" more in a hilly area.

it also depends on the cam. you have to start to get 'on the cam' to
get good fuel efficiency, and the more radical the timing the more rpm
you'll need to find it. i'm not talking about wringing it out, i'm
talking about approaching the torque peak. [nb. engine performance is
also affected by advancing or retarding the cam]

'60s and '70s amc sixes officially developed maximum torque at
1600-1800 rpm. you could get an american with 199, 3sp+od and 3.08
rear - and the od was set to engage at under 40mph. cam duration was
only 244* 'on the ramps' [@ .005"]; i've never seen the equivalent
.050" measurement. a jeep 4.0 would certainly pull these gears in
such a light car, but with 280* ['87-'95] it should get best mileage
at slightly higher rpms.

one of the reasons smaller engines are happier at higher rpms is that
they're often cammed more radically to make up for their displacement
lack.

Mike,

If you look at the Nov. issue of Popular Hot Rodding,
there is a 6 page spread on a 70 AMX in there with 18"
wheels(shameless plug, there is a little blurb in the
article Alfano Performance building the engine and
what it is. A couple mistakes in the specs but
close). The wheels fit real nice on the car and don't
rub. Now that is a 70 so the front suspension is a
little different but if you take all the right
measurements, you should be able to get a larger wheel
like this in the right offset to fit. There is a tool
out there for doing this. I saw it once on Chop, Cut,
Rebuild. Looks like a round ring with adjustments to
move the backspacing and rim width until you find a
good combination. You are in CA so there should be a
lot of custom shops around who could do that for you.

By the way, I am in Anaheim CA for the week. If there
is any cool AMC places or junk yards to check out,
please let me know.

Thanks,

Hi Eddie,

I am looking to upgrade the rim and tire size on the
rear wheels of my
AMX. My first question is: what are the largest rims
that will fit?
Second question: do you carry them? Third question:
what's the price?

Please note that I am not interested in shopping
around. If you've got
a solution for me (I want to jam as much rubber,
especially width,
under the stock fender as possible) let me know and we
can get going on a
purchase.

Thank you,

Thanks for the plug Eddie. I am surprised I even saw
this. I typically just scan through the subject
titles looking for items of interest but I am in
California this week on business and actually had some
time this morning to blow so I am reading a little
more.

Colin, as for your engine, I can put together all the
parts you would need from top to bottom or build you
an engine. Shipping maybe an issue for you as a
complete engine will add a bit to the cost but if you
don't have an engine builder in your area
knowledgeable in AMC engines, it would be well worth
it. As for buying a re-man, I would only use this in
an emergency. A lot of the re-manufacturers just put
the bare minimum into the engine figuring certain
percentage are going to come back anyway. It is a
roll of the dice there. Better off spending the $ to
know exactly what you have. Give me a call if you
want to discuss this further. I think you can put
together a nice engine for an Ambo with your budget.

Thanks,

Hi Colin
Have you written or called Nick Alfano for your
engine needs? He
lives in Wisc. but he specializes in AMC and could
probably guide you on
the best route or even build to your budget.
I had a 4 door car that I got in 1978.It was my
grandmothers.I kept
it for years and sold it when our 5th child came
along in 1998. I have
regretted that move and tried to buy it back for
years. The owner
crushed it last year. It still hurts. Sentimental
reasons keep these cars
alive......soooooo before you ever think of getting
rid of it, make sure
you wont have regrets otherwise, do it a little at a

I am in Anaheim CA until Friday and had a little time
here and there to go parts scrounging if there is
anything around the area. If you know of a good place
to go to, please call me at 262-308-1302 and let me
know. I am also looking for any cars for sale that
would be worth taking a look at.

Thanks,

RE:Best wishs for an AMCer

My good friend Mike Canada called me a couple hours ago. He's on his way to
Chicago for heart transplant and got the call today. I've know Mike for over
30 years and he's always been a die hard AMCer.Let's all wish him the best of
luck. thanks Larry R. Daum
