Problem not solved though, as soon it's the same thing where it won't
want to restart after driving for a while. Putting a battery booster on
when it's acting up makes it fire right up, and I took apart and cleaned
up the starter and put in new cables, which leads me to think it's an
alternator problem. Then when I'm driving it at night for the first
time, I notice the alt light is glowing dimly with the headlights on.

In the for what it is worth department, I have owned my 1970 Javelin
since 1979 and my Dad owned
It since 1971 and it too had a starter that ran poopy when hot. Right
from the get go. Of course the
story at the time was that the high compression engine was hard to start
when hot thus the starter
would of course run poopy. As it was not the only car in the world at
the time that did that most every
one and myself bought into it. Eventually the starter went and surprise,
the replacement did the same
thing. Until it went and then whatduyuh know! The next replacement never
gave a bit of trouble. I really
do not know why so many cars of the time had the same problem unless the
starters of the time were
one step removed from basic junk. Since then I have gone through the odd
starter here and there and
have lost them when I did not think that I should (I currently have 3
AMC cars registered plus 2 drivers)
but I have never had a starter act like that again. Sorry I can not help
you here except give some
sympathy but to tell the truth my feeling is the starters are faulty.
Continuing on, the Motorola Alternator system has always left the idiot
light on glowing dimly at night.
Some times more so than others. My 68 Rambler Rebel 290 did it when it
was a late model used car
and my 70 Javelin still does it and has been doing it as long as I can
remember, which is since 1971.
Never had a problem keeping the battery charged. Irritating as it might
be the system works. Why
have I not changed it? The basic reason, it keeps the battery charged
and if it ain't broke there is no
sense in fixing it.
However trouble shooting is easy. Harbor freight sells a $3.00 digital
voltmeter on sale. I always buy
a couple of them as they make good gifts, I can keep one in every tool
kit I own and they work just
as well as the $350.00 DVM I also have.
To trouble shoot.
Key off, motor off. DVM reading of battery equals 12.4 volts DC.
Indicates fully charged.
Key On Motor running, DVM reading of the battery equals 14.3 Volts DC.
Indicates alternator is working.
There are few other types of tests that you can do also to indicate a
nuance or two, such as read the
battery voltage with the key off and then turn on the headlights. The
reading should not drop by much,
a volt or less is normal. However if the lights do not come on and the
batter voltage changes very
little that says you have a defective connection on one of the big wires
from the battery. (usually)
Take them off of the posts and the terminals and the engine block and
clean and re-assemble will usually
fix things up. If the battery voltage drops considerably down to
something less than 8 volts and the lights
do not come on that is a good indication that your battery is toast,
make it go away.
Just keep in mind, if the battery voltage is 12.4 volts with the engine
off, the alternator is probably getting the
job done. 'Specaily if it reads 14.3 with the engine running.
Don't know if this helps any, but been there, done that and managed to
live through it.

Sorry John, but 12.4 volts is partially undercharged. 12.6 volts is fully
charged. The trouble I run into with the Ford type starters is the nose
bushing wears to one side and causes the armature to come too close to the
side, dragging the amps skyhigh. NAPA sells a cheap ammeter that slides over
the battery cable for draw testing (it's in the section with test lights in
most stores)

Oh that's how I took it -- your subconscious came up with the
right smart-(ass :-) reply just when needed. To me, your "8000
lbs..." remark meant 'bloated, complicated, expensive, fluffy,
excess car driven by clueless fool unable to use advantages in
said bloat'. And Molly, a spare, clean, simple, well setup car

in charge of the meetings, which was to introduce AMC Dealers to the NEW

you'll have the FIRST opportunity to see it, and get in the proper frame of
mind. Very simply instructions on it's use are all that is needed. Simply
display it in sight of everyone and happily run-down the swinging new
features of the car that are provocatively present in numbered call outs."
There was a film and record originally for presentation. Those instructions
read (worth noting AMC's great marketing) "Two for the Road: This AMX
features film will sustain the stimulating meeting enviroment this meeting
guide poster will cause....That's a PROMISE!"
and the second film states: "One Of A Kind! This is a fast moving, different
type of marketing presentation that should shake some of the cobwebs loose.
The film looks closely at the YOUTH MARKET, who they are, where they are,
and how to reach them! Now go ahead and take the first look, hang it up and
have a swinging meeting! Are you FEELING GROOVY yet? Need a scotch? LETS
SELL SOME CARS!!"

"All the major Nash dealers were crowded into a room, given drums, and told
to beat them on cue according to the widow of the owner of the dealership I
would later buy out in the 90s, P. K. Williams on Congress street in Austin,
Texas. She indicated that she never knew why they rounded up the dealers
like this once a year, but spouses were invited, they just could not attend
the meetings, not that they would want to be in there with all those drums
and Cuban cigars. Not sure if that is a pitcher of ice water on the middle
of the table or a pitcher of Stoli. P. K. Williams was one of the highest
volume Nash dealers in Texas. He would morph into Rambler then AMC before
closing. He is pictured directly below the "H" in the "Sell Nash" banner on
the back wall. Ironically, AMC President William V. Luneberg would later say
in 1971: "We want to be recognized as a company that marches to the beat of
it's own drums;" when he was describing AMCs 'philosophy of difference'. "

On the showfield in Kenosha for the huge Homecoming in 1998 there were 3-4
Dodges that had been produced in Kenosha at the former AMC plant. Looked odd
sitting there on a field of over 1000 AMC vehicles. Over the hill on same
field there was a few Nashes. And one Ajax. All AMC somehow related, scotch
or not.
Yes, cars can be fun and serious. Most are fun. I saw a older gentleman
driving his pristine 55-57 T Bird, top down this morning. My boys
instinctively yelled 'papa! Hot Wheels car!' Not knowing what it is, made
before even I was born. Timeless nonetheless. One day some will look back on
those 3-4 Mopars (New Yorkers? Dynasties?) on the field almost a decade ago.
Did anyone take their photos? Did anyone go over and talk to the owners?
Welcome them? Did AMCers act like it was Hezbollah Dodge's over there? I
don't know, but I did walk up and check them out. Where are they now?

I agree. Not everyone wants a AMC. Not everyone wants to
restore/restify/fix/drive a AMC. But for those of us who still do (how many
people here drive their AMC daily in 2006? I drive EXCLUSIVELY AMC and have
since 1976...) get out and enjoy the products AMC made. It don't have to be
a "collectible" musclecar. You will find wagons are just as much fun, as are
convertibles as are four doors. All worth having fun with in some fashion!
There will be more from the likes of great storytellers like Foster, Brooks,
Mayes, maybe even get Zinn out of Amishville to write AMC again. However,
everyone has a story to tell when it comes to AMC. How many of you have ever
been to a cruise night or car show or just driving your AMC and had someone
tell you 'tey remember those Ramblers' or 'I used to have one like that' or
'so and so worked at the dealership/factory/lot' for instance? Tell everyone
about it.

*Cars can be fun and serious. Here's another chance for all to shine. Tell
us the story of the real "Rambler" that Chrysler almost produced. Go back
before Mopar built the Valiant; back to when the Nash was new. When what
grew on the old AMC family tree actually got -noticed- by the American
Big-3.
Mike/Tom/X should notice the difference between my "serious" and "fun" --- I
took the "8,000 pound Chrysler" theme model year still unknown] and simply
riffed on it; maybe saying or showing something new or of interest to
someone. I don't expect everyone to read between the lines, to find all the
factoids, or even to get all the embedded jokes, but, like life itself, it's
out there for the taking. Free of charge. The right price for Rambler
mentality (and for Rambler mentalitty...)
And the right prize in Rambler research? The "Milner Marlin" maybe?
Now I'm being serious -and- having fun: there really was such a car.
Third chance to contribute something. Go to it; it's your AMC life. Don't
rely on someone else to do it for you.
Foster Brooks' books may not tell you many more AMC stories. Stude-Packard
