Can someone provide the AMC or vendor part numbers for
the 1977 EGR valve? The application is a 1977 258
2-bbl. The numbers should be in the emissions section
of the 1977 TSM. Unfortunately, that year AMC divided
the TSM into separate sections for body, chassis,
powerplant and I don't have the powerplant book.

My EGR is an aftermarket unit and I am replacing it.
It doesn't have any reference number on it and I need
to configure the new EGR valve the match the original
valve.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, sometimes you just gotta go for it.
I max bid $145. on my 4 disc CD changer in my Dakota.
The winning bid was $76! Boy was I happy! I also just spent $297 to buy the D&D 2.95 geared trans and input shaft that needs a cluster. I could get a real piece of crap. I won'tknow for sure untill Friday when FedEx is supposed to drop it off. I've got my fingers crossed.

No offense taken and I wasn't trying to be offinsive either. Just didn't get what he was saying at all. Lol...

Yeah, its all old-school stuff. My interest in it was merely the motor and I thought the Jeep was going to be much more of a shitbox than it is. I think its probably project-worthy, which sucks since I wanted to take the motor out and save it. I do have a friend with an affinity for old Waggies that is already asking me about it, so I suppose he could drop in a newer FSJ 360 with factory parts if he wasn't concerned with being correct. I have like 3 complete FSJ 360's with full accessories sitting around. It would also somve my titleproblem, as it would then be his problem. Lol...

One thing you can do though is make dead-sure the fluid level
is correct, in Neutral, not Park. They're fine transmissions,
but very fussy about fluid level.

excellent advice. i lucked into just such a person when my marlin
needed work, and i didn't have to tell him twice. he not only knew
what i was talking about, he had all the parts - including tweaks - on
the shelf, as he'd done the post office jeeps for years.

bmw and others also used aluminum warners for many years, but volvo
may be friendlier as they currently use the aisin-warner aw4 [=jeep]
in rwd cars.

I don't think they draw any more current, or get hotter, than
the old ones. They use a really hot filament inside a bulb
(inside the sealed housing) that contains a gas that slows
the burnout of the filament. I run them exclusively, and in
plastic-grilled cars (75 Gremlin) absolutely no problem.

I now run removable-bulb type headlamps (H4 bulbs I think).
Cibie makes good reflectors; you can get equiv. reflectors from
Summit. About $40/side for 8". Good ones have a half-moon light
pattern that puts all the light on the road, not in drivers
eyes. 55W lamps (more current) and I run relays and short, fat
wiring to the battery. Both the 63 Rambler and the Hornet. (In
the Rambler, the old headlight switch burned up, I had to rebuid
the contacts myself (desktop surgery) and ran relays to take the
load of the senile switch. That all happened before the Cibies.

I know what you mean about the 327.
The one I have for my Ambassador is a 68 Vigilante 327, 37,000 original miles!
I paid $280 for it the Turbo 400 and the Dana 20? tranfer case and drove 10 hours round trip to get it! It all came out of a dealership plow Jeep that the rest of the Jeep rotted away due to salt and sitting all summer in a field! Inside of the engine is spotless! The guy who put it up on eBay was ticked when it only went to $280, but he didn't put a reserve on it! It was already out and ready to go when I got there to pick it up too! :]
Take it out of the Jeep and give the rest to your friend.
Let him deicde what he wants to do with it. Unless he is into restorations he'll pull the entire driveline and replace it with something more trail worthy anyway! Thosed closed knuckle front axles are useless on the trails, Turn radius is huge!

by law headlights are supposed to be 55w or 60w max, regardless of
bulb type. [xenon projectors are supposed to be 35w, which imho is
still too much] sealed beam halogens would be fine and might even run
microscopically cooler, since they radiate more of their power as
light. there are enhanced halogens that work afaik by coating the
lens with a heat mirror, trapping the radiant heat and letting them
run a 75w filament - with its light output - on 55w. i would expect
these to be hotter since they can't radiate as much heat away and must
conduct it.

replaceable halogen bulbs can be had in several higher powers - 80w,
100w, 130w - but while you may get away with them it isn't strictly
legal.

Dan:

I posted here about 2 months back asking about auto
transport. I had never had a car hauled before, so
went into it pretty clueless.

My experience was bad. I put a bid out to like 10
different companies and their prices ranged from a low
of $750 to a high of about $1150 to move a car from
San Luis Obsispo, CA, to Chicago. I went with a
comapany called Cosmin, they bid about $900 and swore
that the car would not be moved off and on different
trailers as it wound its way Cross Country. I was
flexible on shipping date, just needed the car moved
in the next two months, or by June 30.

Well, these folks pretty much d*cked around and could
never seem to schedule the car for pick up, and to
make matters more irritating, they never contacted me,
I always (politely) contacted them for updates. After
about six weeks they told me that just couldn't seem
to get anyone to pick the car up in SLO, and would I
possibly get it down to LA for them???? Ha ha ha!
What the hell am I contacting a shipper for if I was
physically there to move a running/driving car???
Anyway, I pretty much gave up on them then and have
made a solemn vow to let anyone who asks about car
shipping to NOT do business with this Cosmin company.

Incidentally, I still do not have the car here, but it
is at a friend-of-a-friend's house near Monterey, CA.
I am having the car brought to me by a friend next
time he comes from California to Illinois, probably in
mid-August, and I'll pay only about $500 to get it.

I guess things always do work out in the end, just not
necessarily how we want . . . .

On the topic of auto transport, finding a service that can assist you with minimal 'dead head' miles is important. For anyone in the hobby in the Chicago area, I've got a dually one ton diesel pickup and a full deck open trailer to help out anyone in the area. Just save my eamil address if you may need a car transported in this area. I'm only 15 miles from Kenosha

I may have found a rear axle it's up near east Central Pa and I'm waiting for the guy to get back to me on the width of it. He doesn't know if it is for a two or four wheel drive!
He is supposed to get back to me about possibly shipping it and the width.
I may use it as an excuse tofinally pick some parts I have scattered over that way, but thought I'd like to get it in the hands of someone I know first :]

Is a gas tank sock really needed? When I repaced the
tank in my Hornet, the sock was almost gone. I tore it
off, cleaned all the residue and installed it with an
open end. I am running a cheapo filter just off the
tank, then the fuel pump and a nice filter just before
the engine. The mechanical pump has been stripped and
is just plugging a hole. Isn't the sock just a
strainer anyways.......Russ

I just had a NOS fuel sending unit installed on my Gremlin and the mechanic
at the time insisted I find a new sock for it. I spoke with Jim Robertson up
here who supplies many AMC parts and he told me to abandon the idea of the
sock and replace it with a GOOD inline fuel filter. Replace the filter every
5 years or so (his words). He has not had a problem with any replacements to
date, so that is what I did, seems to be ok for now.

Yep. just a strainer is all it is.
We would occasionally on FSJ's that plugged a sock just take a air hose and Blow the sock off with air pressure. The tanks are a bear on some of those to get off.
