I just had a NOS fuel sending unit installed on my Gremlin and the mechanic 
at the time insisted I find a new sock for it. I spoke with Jim Robertson up 
here who supplies many AMC parts and he told me to abandon the idea of the 
sock and replace it with a GOOD inline fuel filter. Replace the filter every 
5 years or so (his words). He has not had a problem with any replacements to 
date, so that is what I did, seems to be ok for now.
