He's been out in CA for two years on a contract job, he's back in Virginia now, and will be looking for a home soon. His other vehicle is a Jeep XJ, that's in the background, and you can see my Pacer ( still needing leaf spring reattached ) in the video. To view it, just go to WWW.YouTube.com, and search on either member Gremlingts or 1966 Rambler, and you should find it easily enough. The microphone isn't the best, but you get the general impression. Jerry Casper __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! If the light doesn't come on, either the bulb is bad or the circuit is open. Since you can rev the car and get the light to come on, the problem is likely the alternator is bad. The studs are 1 7/8-in long and a new stud would have fit into the hole from the rear of the hub, but I wasn't prepared to swage it into place like Tom J. suggested. Besides I have a hub puller and shop press, so I just decided to bite the bullet and pull the hub. It took my five pound long handled sledge pounding on the hub puller "handle", but I got it off with no trauma to the car. I used my Mexican torque wrench (216 pound body on an 18-inch extension) to torque the hub nut back into place. The car needs new rear shoes too, so I got those at Kragens. They amazingly had those in stock. I took the drums to Midas down the street to have them turned and they were almost out of limits (10.060 limit) and the "tech" refused to put the Midas touch on them. I have a 77 Hornet AMX I am parting out which could supply drums I think, but decided that new drums would be better so I ordered them from rockauto.com. Not cheap but they'll be here in three days. To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <19944-44CD1168-2947@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII The method suggested without removing the hub has been used on all brands of cars for more years than I am alive (60 in sept) As a professional mechanic I have used it for almost 40 years with out one problem. Just recently on my orange Hornet 2 years ago. You wasted your time and still need to torque the nut properly. Not torqueing the nut properly will come back to haunt you unless you have the finesse of my father. He was an old mechanic, German trained and came to this country in 1932 at the age of 18. He could torque a head bolt with a breaker bar and challenge anyone to see it he was off. It never was off. He used a 3/4" drive socket & ratchet and a 3 foot piece of pipe to torque his axel nuts. I watched him do it. Have the axel nut properly torqued. And if you took it apart this far, did put new wheel bearings and seals in it. You were right there. More work needed than for a simple 5 minute repair and once it was apart the Rambler mentality took hold. Sorry if I seem hard but I have seen this type of thing all my life. That's why I didn't pull the axle when I had the hub off. There was no sign of leakage from the seal and I haven't driven the car yet to know if there was any unusual noise in the rearend. I'm just trying to put this car back on the road in a safe dependable condition, not restore it. I do believe in replacing high wear items if I have a unit apart, but lots of little Gremmies live their whole life without needing rear axle seals or wheel bearings. Besides it's only a 258 auto. I'm not gonna race it. I did buy new brake drums after all. No Rambler mentality here. I could have reused the existing drums since they weren't "at" limits yet. I have put in new door hinge busshing, new shocks and have new brake hoses to go on. The engine room has all new hoses. So much for this kind of thing. As for pulling the hub, like I said, I have a hub puller and a shop press so it was no big deal except for the force required to get the hub off. The rist hub I pulled was on my Pacer and it was disconcerting because I didn't realize just how much force you have to apply. I kept using a bigger hammer until I got the job done. But big hammers have gotten me into trouble before and I was leary. As for torgueing the nut. Your comments are noted. I plan to do that, but 1.5 (18 inches) x 216 pounds equals 324 pounds of torque applied already. I was standing on the extension. There's lots of truck shops in Salinas though who I'm sure have the proper torque wrench so I'll stop soon and have it torqued. The car is not running yet and besides I don't have the proper torque wrench. If you normally get the list in your mail and haven't been receiving it lately, check your junk, trash, or SPAM boxes. If your service has a "whitelist" (list of acceptable addresses for you to receive), make sure you add amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx to your list of allowed addresses. If your mail bounces several times the list will automatically unsubscribe you, so you may not be a member any more! If that's the case sign back up then check the option to not receive mail. That will allow you to read the list on-line and still be able to post replies. If you've been unsubscribed you can still read, but can't post. ============================================================= _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
