Doc,
An old shop instructor I had in motor mechanics, many, many years ago used to set his timing at idle with a vacuum guage.
Set your timing to the highest vacuum setting you can attain at idle RPM.
He explained that it would give you the best and most reliable idle "tailored to your engine configured the way, you had it."
Don't know if that will work today, but I can tell you it worked then.
Don

There is a section on ignition timing on the AMX Files. Go to "Resources", then "Technical", and look for timing. The subject comes up every once in a while, but although a search returns 182 messages, there is no link to the resource guide. Maybe next time this message will pop up.

on the older corvettes. Hooker makes em but not for amc. any idea's. I was

I think we have it posted at the Classic AMX Club of Portland web pags, too.

Click on> http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/classicamx/index.htm

And go to the "April 2001 Newsletter" for Ralph Winslow's engine timing
tips...

It is probably the same article as at www.amxfiles.com but don't know for
sure.

Good ol' RalphW has been a good steady source... I think there is another
good article in that same newsletter.

I'm copying this to the AMC-List because someone may have tried it, or have an early and late AMC 15 lying around in pieces and CAN try it.... Listers, please read the earlier messages below for the questions... My answer:

I'm afraid not. Only Ford and some Chrysler axles have a "third member". The front housing (third member) comes out, and that housing holds the differential and pinion shaft and bearings. The rear cover is part of the axle housing, or is stamped/cast as one piece with the center section. GM, AMC, Dana, and some Chrysler axles have a removeable rear cover. The pinion shaft and bearings is part of the cast center section that the axle tubes and rear cover bolt onto. Since the front doesn't come off, the pinion shaft and bearings stay in the housing and the differential and ring gear come out the back. Even if the pinion shafts and bearings are the same on early and late AMC 15 axles you can't just change the pinion gear and shaft. The seal and where the seal mounts is totally different. IIRC the pinion seal on the "big nut" axle seals on the pinion shaft. The later ones seal on the yoke. I don't think the seals will swap. I believe the machining is different on the front of th!
 e housi
ng. I could be wrong -- I'e never tried to swap them. If the bearings are the same for say a 1960 American (all big nut) and a 1968 American six cylinder car (all "standard" yoke), the pinion gear shafts should interchange. I can't guarantee that they will, but there's a very good chance that they do. AMC is known for not changing things unless they had too in order to save money for more important developments. If the bearings match, then you'll have to buy a pinion shaft seal for a 68 and see if it will fit the early model housing. If that fits AND the bearings interchange, you should be able to change the ring and pinion gear, seal, and yoke to a later model. ANY 66-88 rear axle will have the same bearings and seals, and the ring and pinion gears interchange. No one has tried this (I'd try with used parts -- the bearing numbers may be different but still be the same bearings) because there has been plenty of later model Americans to swap axles from. Such is no longer the !
 case. O
n the bright side, the rear axle from a Hornet/Concord/Gremlin/Spirit should be about the right size to swap into a 64-69 American. It's a bit to wide for a 58-63.

It could be timing but I'd go with a lean mixture first. I've had more
backfires from that than anything else.

frank has it pretty much right. i can't recall the mitchell
interchange listing separate big nut and non-big-nut housings for the
'64-9 american, which makes me think there was only one listing, but
i'm not positive. anyway, if you found a '67-9 housing chances are
it'd already be stuffed with running gear.

the hornet et al rear is 57" wide vs. the '64-9 american 55.5", not
too wide to fit but it'll shift some things. you'd have a challenge
getting 6" rims off the wider rear without a lot of jacking.

I read someone else's reply to Tom Jennings cool MP3 player, regarding
changing you current radio over to a mp3 player and an up to date radio by
retaining the original looks with new guts, and I thought that sounded like
a good idea, until that is, when my son explained to me what his IPOD could
do.

Turns out his IPOD can hold something like 900 songs and these songs can be
changed on a whim, add the FM transmitter he purchased and you can use it on
any car that has an FM radio tuner in the car.

If I had known this a year ago, I wouldn't have spent over $800 to have a
top of the line AM/FM MP3 player with remote installed in my car - sure the
car looks stock since I left the original AM radio installed and just placed
the remoter sender in an unobtrusive place in the dash and had the radio
installed in the back of the car but geez for under $400 you can get an IPOD
with an FM transmitter and use it anywhere.

Count me as totally taken by the IPOD and what it can do.

Almost every DIN chasis out there above $100 has inputs as well as outputs now.
Sony even makes a player with memory built in the head unit. You plug it into you computer with a USB cabl;e download your music and carry it back out to your car. Your all set, no IPOD to plug in No FM transistor. I think it's a 1GB memory IIRC. I was considering one for my truck when I Ebayed the 4 disc AM/FM unit for Less than $80. So I used my Rambler mentality and said fooey on it! 4 discs of burnt disc music is enough to keep me from getting bored! The FM stations around these parts SUCK!

Quantum to be Awarded Contract by ARB to Supply Hydrogen Hybrid
Vehicles

?

Irvine, CA - June 26, 2006 - Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies
Worldwide, Inc., (Nasdaq: QTWW) today announced that it received
notice from the California Air Resources Board of its intent to lease
4 hydrogen-fueled Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles. These hydrogen hybrid
vehicles will be put in service by the State of California later this
year as part of the California Hydrogen Highway Network (CaH2Net).

?

CaH2Net is a State initiative to promote the use of hydrogen as a
means of diversifying our sources of transportation energy used,
while ensuring environmental and economic benefits.? To be
implemented in three phases, the California Hydrogen Blueprint Plan
outlines a path to 250 hydrogen fueling stations and 20,000 hydrogen
fueled vehicles which will help set the stage for the eventual full-
scale commercialization of these technologies.

?

Quantum?s H2Hybrid package for the Toyota Prius includes an
electronic multi-point hydrogen injection system, turbocharger and
intercooler, compressed hydrogen fuel storage module, hydrogen fuel
delivery system and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
crashworthy design and validation.? In addition to performing in
specified starting conditions and meeting certain drivability
specifications, the vehicles have been designed and tested to achieve
SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) emissions standards and
have undergone crash testing to verify the safety of the converted
vehicles.? Quantum is also developing an H2Hybrid package for the
Ford Escape Hybrid sport utility vehicle, in conjunction with the
U.S. Army, for use as an administrative vehicle as well as a hydrogen
technology demonstrator.?

?

"Quantum is pleased to have its hydrogen hybrid Toyota Priuses
selected to be part of the California Hydrogen Highway initiative.?
Interest in Quantum?s hydrogen hybrid technologies continues to grow,
with 30 hydrogen Priuses currently in operation in Southern
California and 23 more now on order, including 15 that are bound for
Norway," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, President and CEO of Quantum.? "We
are proud to supply our California-developed alternative fuel and
alternative energy technologies as solutions to the environmental and
energy issues impacting the State, our nation, as well as the rest of
the world.? Quantum is ready today to fulfill the California Hydrogen
Blueprint?s plan for 20,000 hydrogen fueled vehicles."
