Jeff, the Mallory Unilite I'm familiar with is a complete distributor. The early ones had some problems, but that should be taken care of in the current versions. If you want to retain a stock look the best bet is a Pertronix Ignitor. It installs in place of your points, and you can keep a set of points in your glove box just in case the Ignitor fails (which is rare). You have to run a switched power wire to the Ignitor, that's the only give-away that something has been changed, and that's hard to notice. The next best for a stock look is the AMC model Ford Duraspark. It will look like a later model, of course. As someone mentioned, it was used from around 1978-91 on all AMCs, including Jeep Grand Wagoneers. You can go one step further and apply the TFI upgrade to the original Duraspark distributor. Rather than redesign the whole distributor when going to a high energy system like GM did, Ford continued using the same distributor body with an adapter for a larger diameter cap. TFI stands for "Thick Film Ignition" and is equivalent in performance to the GM HEI. As noted it uses a separate coil. To get the full benefits you need the special TFI coil as well as the plug wires and cap. The wires are a necessity when using the cap due to the connector, but it will work with a standard coil (but not much point). These parts can be purchased from any auto parts store -- ask for the cap, wires, and coil from a 1984 or so Ford F-250 w/460. It's best to search for "TFI Upgrade" -- part numbers are listed on some sites. _______________________________________________ AMC-List mailing list AMC-List@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list or go to http://www.amc-list.com
