Jason started telling me that the car needed at least 400 to 500 hours
of
work for prep and paint - equate to around 25 to 30 thousand dollars.
You read it correct
folks 30 thousand dollars (Canadian but still alot of money) to paint my
frigging car!
SNIP
Keep in mind, the term dings and rust can be VERY relative and can range
from holes that can be covered by your hand to the factory under body
paint is still the same color it was when the factory painted it and a
hose will clean off the street grime. Dents can have the same
relativity.

SNIP
Now my question to the list, I want to get the car painted, but I don't
need
a concours paint job, how much should I expect to pay.

A realistic number than you can expect to have to fork over for a decent
driver paint job that you can be proud of at cruise night will be in the
neighbor hood of $3000 to $5000. Painting is labor intensive and labor
is expensive and today materials can be expensive too. I have seen paint
that can be purchased almost anywhere for $4500.00 gallon. Also keep in
mind that at $3000.00 that is a neighbor hood that you may not want to
be in after dark.
Astute shopping can alter that a bit, as can doing as much prep work
your self such as chrome removing and re-installing.
Many of the above reasons is why I have purchased equipment and learned
to do my own paint jobs. And I am still learning. When you watch Barret
Jackson sales or any deep pocket auction automotive sales many of those
high zoot cars have $30,000 paint jobs or something approaching that
number. That is part of the price of restoration.

For anyone that prefers the long oil filters, there's some on eBay. Search
for LF581. These are Fleetguard filters, made by International as I recall.
He seems to have a bunch of these as this is the second or third auction I've
seen him put up.

Roofs rust under certain coastal area moisture conditions. Don't ask me the specifics, I've never been anyplace close enough to one of these areas to figure out why. I've repaired roof rust. It can be with several methods. Wth that vintage car in California, if all else is solid and sounds good. I'd get to searching and find a complete roof. The hardtop 65 would be particularly easy to do a roof swap on! You have very little in the way of roof to work out after it is replaced! I don't think you could find an easier car to do this too! There are some things to be carefull of when doing this swap. One is alignment, brace things before you cut the old top off. Then make sure you trim the cuts a little at a time till you get a perfect level square fit. Last thing is be very careful to not grind away your welds!!! Very careful! This is the biggest concern with roof replacements, quality welds and not grinding them away and destroying thier strength!

Mike,

You mentioned the window cranks. If you mean the
regulators are suspect, replacements will need to come
from another hardtop or convertible. Sedan regulators
won't work. I do have a couple of hardtop doors with
glass (and regulators) if you need them.

I parted out a 64 American hardtop and could have
saved the roof for you if the timing had been
different.

IMHO the best way to replace the roof is just to
replace the skin. Carefully grind the spot welds on
the new and old skin (and/or use a spot weld cutter)
and remove both skins and swap them. While the skin
is off, you can make any repairs to the supporting
channels and gussets. That is the repair we'll be
doing to a 69 Javelin here at home. You won't have to
worry about basic alignment of the roof structure,
window fit or other issues. I'm getting professional
help with the Javelin and that is the approach we are
taking.

Contact me if you want the window regulators.

Regards,
Joe Fulton

mike; or any one else, I have your Americans roof. It
is on a 64 440-H and you can have it for $1000, comes
with a complete running car (twin-stick). No I won't
part it out, I have too many cars and need to make
room for the 59 I am picking up soon. Will a '68 2-dr
post work? I can let that go for $300, but I keep the
tires. 503-589-9845.......Russ

Kim, welcome to the world of AMC. I don't care what
car you have we are the Rodney Dangerfield of the auto
world. You can shop around and go to the Grey Poupon
shops for an overpriced paint job or go to Maaco for
the lower end.
The shop you went to cater to those who warehouse
their cars, the Jay Leno crowd. Yeah, I'm calling him
a poser, so what. They pay premium and only take out
their cars to shows. These so called "daily drivers"
are the ones with mirrors under their cars. not my
scene either.
If the car is wearing it's original paint and in good
shape, take it to a good detail shop and get it
professionally buffed. Out here in oregon you will
start at $200, so don't accept one of those cheap
jobs. Wear the original paint and chips proudly...Russ
