That's right, Packard sold AMC the smaller Clipper engine, keeping the larger one to themselves. The big Packard for 56 was a 374. The 320 was dropped and the 352 took its place in the Clipper -- and Nash/Hudson big Ambo/Hornet. I'd rather have one of the "Specials" than a Packard powered model. The 250 might have been a bit small, but the cars were a bit lighter, half year only, and the 250 had a 4V carb, solid lifter cam (not that it was anything special back then) and dual exhaust. The "Special" was 350 pounds lighter and gave up 30 hp and 80 pounds of torque to the Packard, but had a little lower rear gear to make up for it. With a three speed and OD the special would out run the Packard (all equipped with Ultramatic only!) in a 1/4 mile sprint. I'm not sure if the Hydramatic was used in the Special -- it was in the six cylinder Nashs and 1957 models with the 327 though. A good place for general car specs: http://www.carnut.com/specs/gen/nash50.html Take the "/gen/nash50.html" off for a listing of a lot of nice specs up to 1960. There are also some rear end width and engine size dimensions (physical space needed). The weight on the AMC V-8 is confusing, he has it listed as "540/600". The 540 figure should be correct for the GEN-2/3, 600 for GEN-1. I'll have to send him a note!
