The AMC 4-cylinder will fit in a Spirit real nice. But, The motor mounts don't line up at all, as AMC used a completely different system of mounting these engines in Eagles & Jeeps. Then, the rear of the block is different from anything AMC ever used. It's my understanding that AMC used the same bolt pattern as the GM 2.8 6-cylinder. I assume this was to save tooling and parts warehousing costs, and probably to simplify assembly line fitting. The block bolt pattern is a much smaller pattern than anything else AMC, and there is no metal available to drill a new pattern. I suppose that someone like Advance Adaptors might have an adaptor for the GM block bolt pattern to adapt to an AMC/Jeep transmission. But, why are you using the AMC 20 rear axle assembly? I can understand if that's all you have available, but that an awfull lot of rear end (and HEAVY, too) for the relatively puny engine. Heck, even Jeep used the AMC corporate 6-9/16" rear end behind the 4.0 with no problems. Save some weight, and get a Gremlin 6-cylinder rear end. If you use the ring & pinion from a 4-cylinder Eagle you would have a 3.54 ratio AND save a BUNCH of weight, too. Isn't this whole issue about gas mileage, anyway? Then you need to reduce weight (not to mention increased "drag" from the larger rear end). Tom Bunsey On September 29, 2005 Jesse wrote: > OK, now let's be nice here!
