Re: Best 4.0 combo

"
" If I was to look for a complete 2WD 4.0 and 5 sp trans (or auto - but I prefer manuals), which yr/model would be best?
"
" I've been tossing different things around in my mind on a drivetrain interchange for the Wagon, and while I have a 360 setup, I keep coming back to a EFI 4.0. I could look for a complete vehicle that way everything is there for the swap.
"
" But, I've seen posted different things on the list and other places that this yr engine is best, or that yr trans should be avoided. What's the best combo/yr/how ti ID?

well...

you'd want a 7120 or 0630 cyl head, so that'd be '91-8 for the engine,
and you'd want one from a wrangler or grand wag so it'd have a
'normal' fan and pulley setup. but you'd also want the '99-up intake
for power [and clearance, if you have power brakes] and maybe the
'99-up iron split exhaust for durability... i'd favor a semi tuned
y-pipe into a 3" dia dupe of the stock exhaust system. i believe
walker makes a muffler or two with small oval case and 3" core.

you'd want a '96-up bell with the external slave replacing the earlier
internal slave/throwout. any year ax-15 would work, but i think
you'll need the '96-up retainer to support the conventional throwout.
or instead of a 'jeep' tranny, you could use an isuzu ar5 aka gm ma5,
used on troopers, canyons, and colorados, and probably trailblazers.
or the nv3550 used since the early years of the 3rd millennium, or
nv1500 in libertys with the neon 4cyl [ick all around]... but they
all have trucklike gearing. the '90 +/- turbo supra r154 is the only
compatible box with carlike gearing.

unless you go with a multipattern bell and mustang 5.0 t5...
