The clamps will stiffen the ride because you take some of the "play" out of the spring, and may make a little noise from the coils hitting the clamps. They are also a real PITA to get in. The easiest way is to take the tire off and jack the car up. But they do work and are reliable. If one did break you'd notice, and you'd be in no danger. If you like the ride height the proper thing to do is order new springs the right height with 15-20% more stiffness. Any of the spring companies can do that.
