Re: Brake pad Question

You didn't say, but I bet it's on the 77 unless the calipers on the 71 have been changed to later model types. The side that's wearing faster should be the outside pad also.

You likely have the Bendix slide type calipers. To fix, pull the calipers but leave the bracket on the car. There's an allen head screw that holds a slide and leaf-type spring in place. Just use a punch or screwdriver and drive the slide and spring out. You can see a pic at http://www.amccf.com/main.html (go to tech info, then the front disc brake assembly from 71 TSM -- I need to get them to correct the labels, those are the 77-81 brakes). Clean the slide areas really good on the bracket, caliper, and removeable slide. Put a coating of anti-seize compound on the contact areas then reassemble. Lay the caliper in place then drive the removeable slide and spring in as a unit, put the lock screw back, and you're all set!

If by chance the piston side is wearing faster you have a sticking piston. You can likely solve this problem by pulling the caliper and taking it apart. Just pop the piston out using air pressure in the brake line inlet (or using fluid pressure -- will make a mess when the piston comes out and may drain the MC so it will need bleeding, so be careful!). Then you can pull the square seal out. Clean the piston and inside the cavity with steel wool (nothing coarser). Use a small wire brush or metal pick to clean the seal groove really good. Corrosion behind the seal is usually what causes the piston to stick. The corrosion makes the seal tighter. that is unless the car has sat a while and the piston and body have started rusting. rebuilt calipers are only $20-$25 each -- you might want to go that route if you plan on keeping the car.
