Re: Numbers, any one?

I've commented on casting numbers vs part numbers before, from an inventory control perspective. A casting number *is* a part number. It is the part number of the bare casting before it has been processed by the machine shop. Think of all the things that need to be done to a raw casting before it becomes a finished part; milling, boring, tapping, etc. The factory had to know how many unfinished castings it had, to plan production at the foundry, as well as in the machine shop.

In addition, one casting may yield multiple finished parts. One example is smog-era exhaust manifolds. All were made from the same casting, but some were processed with air injection ports. In the aftermarket, there is one style, with plugs fitted that are to be removed if you need them, but the factory didn't do it that way.

What is available in the parts book is a subset of the part numbers used in the factory. For example, many interior parts were molded in color for production, but available for service only in black, to be painted to match by the dealer.

None of this explains why Tom's block should have an 8 cylinder part number.

I trust Gwen made no typos; does anyone have any ideas on why this 3.595" bored six block would have a V8 part number?

Tom,

You may have a casting number and not a part number. I'll admit to not paying terribly huge attention to this topic when it comes up but it seems to me that casting numbers are the same length as part numbers so maybe its just coincidence that they're the same.

Also, I just took a look at my 67 wagon and the number on the block is 3170721 but my parts book doesn't show this as an available part number. I would assume this means that it's a casting number since the part numbers for six cylinder blocks start with 320. Also, they don't list a bare block (the most bare has bearings and all the core and oil gallery plugs installed).
