[BaadAssGremlins] Re: For Sale - Nice Looking 73 Ambassador 401 Nevada police car

They probably got a good deal on them. Hard to imagine that all those cars up in Canada with AC, while down here no AC in those fleet Ambassadors mentioned earlier. In late 1990s/early 2000's the US postal system decided to get away from the little DJ-5 mail Jeeps. Too many of them were getting broken into by crackheads. People would wait until the letter carrier left and walked away from route knowing they could be blocks away, then would go window shopping, driving up, smashing out glass and simply grabbing crates of mail in effort to steal checks like social security ones, also credit cards.

So up on Shepard road the main post office place started having auctions weekly, selling the DJ-5s for pennies on dollar as they simply retired them and went to the secure Grumman vans. On the Grumman vans it has a door inside like UPS and FedEx trucks, so no glass in back, and can lock it between cab and rear. But the litle DJ-5 Jeeps sold off a decade ago, most of them had less than 60K miles and most of them sold under $1500 each. Being a vehicle people remember and notice, places like pizza companies loaded up on them. One place here in Houston painted their DJ5s a big bad green color, so stood out in traffic when delivering pizzas in them. Fast forward 10 years later don't see them on road anymore, even delivering pizzas.

Eddie - We got these cars at the end of the road  - and the last couple of years they sold them in Canada, all were equipped with air from the factory, no matter what other options were or were not on the car -  it was big selling point and an attempt to get back into the market up here.  I am not sure what years they were built - but our experience was limited to about the last 2 years. The ones we got had a high ratio rear end in them so they were quick off the line, but no top end, topping out about a hundred - and the suspension was notorious  for coming apart - the guys would get them bouncing, and they would actually pull the front wheels off the highway.   One of our maintenance people once told me that we paid for every one of these cars 3 times - once for the initial purchase, and twice more in repair costs keeping them on the road until we could get rid of them.
