Back in the early fifties the town cops in my home town in northern Nebraska had a couple of Nash Ambassador big OHV sixes with overdrive. The bathtub Nashes had great top end. When some out of town guy blew through town at high speed (usually some kid w/flat head Ford or Merc) the cop would chase him for 20 miles at 100 mph or so. Racer was probably turning something over 6000 rpm in his flathead w/stump puller drag race rear end. Cop was turning 3000 in overdrive. Cop would just hang back until the guys engine blew. That was my first lesson that there was a lot more to performance than just 1/4 mile time/speed. Not a popular point of view on this forum, I know.
