Another thing is that the gas could have went bad. Depends on what city and
state you from, but for instance here in Houston, if you let a car sit for say 6
months, the gas gets crappy and hard to start. And will die at stop lights,
signs, ect. Something you could do is dump a can of Siloo in tank then go fill
it up with best octane gas you can find in your area, Chevron Techron is really
good for this, so is Shell 93. At that time I would also put not one, but TWO
"clear" fuel filters on your car, one from where the metal line comes from frame
BEFORE it gets to fuel pump, the other up near carb. You will be surprised at
how much stuff the lower one catches, even in restored cars. But I run two fuel
filters on all my cars and have since 1980s.
If you do indeed need a carb, O'Reillys stoccks them for about $250.
Something not mentioned also in this thread is I want you to get screwdriver and
"tighten" the screws that hold the carb together, you will see them when
removing the air filter, should be 5 or 6, but tighten them as they do sometimes
come loose, and have on several of my cars due to vibration. One in particular,
my wife's beautiful Sunshine Yellow 78 Concord wagon, used to do that all the
time until I put Locktight on screws, but when they were loose, car would die
when stopping! While you are tightening those also tighten the four bolts
holding carb to intake, as same thing, they can vibrate loose.
But also be sure to look at vacuum lines like others mentioned, I just
replaced a whole mess of them on my 82 Eagle wagon, and what a difference it
made. If you have any little black plugs to inlets on carb, replace them same
time, as mine fell off in hand so brittle the other day.

as a followup on the vac leak: try spraying wd40 around
the carb joints and connections, a little at a time to see if the idle
picks up. if a given point makes a difference, you have something to
check....Ron

I agree with the rebuilt carb. I use to rebuild them all the time
but I must admit some of my rebuilds ended up being traded in on
new ones.

Good guess Terry-how about a vac leak? Never
assume just because a carb is rebuilt that cant still be the
problem. How about a chunk of dirt or carbon in idle
circuit? --- On Sun, 12/13/09, Terry Atkins

[BaadAssGremlins] I need help with my
Gremmie...
Hi everyone! I didn't drop off the face of the earth just
crazy life stuff.... Anyway, I am having some real issues
with my 78 Grem. It hasn't had any problems until just a
couple months ago. I hadn't been driving it much until a month
ago when it became my only vehicle again to drive. It's dying
every time I take my foot off the gas. I've had 2 friends
trying everything to figure out what is causing the problem.
So far, we've replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, coil. The
spark plugs, wires etc are fine. Dist. is fine. The carb has
just been rebuilt. In fact there is a cannister that is
attached to it and I was told that it was something for
emmissions in AZ. When my friend rebuilt it he found tiny
charcoal pieces floating in the bowl of the carburetor. It
still ran the same after all this stuff has been done. I am
wondering if by chance any of the charcoal pieces could have
gotten into the fuel filter and clogged it up? I can drive it
but I have to get it in neutral and and keep my foot on the
gas and left foot to brake or it dies. It cranks back over
everytime. Sucking gas too. I am sure that is because I have
to keep reving it up. Now he did bypass that charcoal
cannister via another persons advice. It didn't seem to change
the outcome of the problems. So I am at my wits end right now
in what it could be. I've never had this issue with any of my
other Grems. I even ran some STP and Carb stuff through the
gas to see if that would help. I just can't figure out what
would be causing it to die as soon as the gas is let up on.
Can any of you help me out? If you could email me direct since
I can't get on the board much right now. Thanks so
much! Suezy N2SweetRock@ yahoo.com
