Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Big Engines running slow.

A couple of years ago I drove my '73 Gremlin (stock 304 V-8) from Lincoln, Nebraska to the AMO meet in Colorado. About 1200 miles altogether, with some side trips. On the way out, it was about 100 degrees in the shade, (but there was no shade on I-80), and if I drove over about 60, the temp gauge would start to climb. That's what kept my speed down. I do remember being passed by a guy in a '52-'54 Nash Ambassador who was doing about 80mph. He probably had overdrive. On the way home, I drove at night, when it was about 25-30 degrees cooler. No problem cruising at 75.

I agree that gearing is the big reason for most "built" cars going slow on the highway. They really are only designed/built for making a very short (1/4 mile) trip in a straight line. They do that very well, but are pretty much worthless for any other purpose.

Of course, there are also the over-restored trailer queens, which make even shorter trips on and off (or in and out) of a trailer. You will never see them on the highway, even though they are probably quite capable.

There are a whole variety of reasons here. One of them is the reason you don't see hemi this and that at major drag events. And if you do, display only. Another reason is why you never see anything Nash at events, those folks don't want to put their car in 80 mph traffic with people who are here illegally, pick one: don't have valid license or insurance, passport, and rims on their Hyundai or Kia are worth more than the vehicle. I DRIVE nothing but AMC vehicles daily in Houston, Texas, and have driven nothing but AMC since got driver license in 76(?) or so. Whether it is a rotisserie restored AMX or resto/mod, regardless of what others are driving, I drive at or slightly above the speed limits. Have not gotten a ticket since AMC last put a V8 in their production vehicles. (1979). But some of these folks in the hot rods, restored cars, muscle cars, ect, just like to enjoy them. Just because you have 1000hp Hennessey Viper (they build them here about 10 miles from me) don't mean you are zipping around at 200mph, of which it could do and then some. Not that one could do 200mph in Houston traffic, that is like wiping one's ass before they shit.

It's like all those folks who thru the decades see my AMCs (pick one) when coming out of club, restaurant, wherever and want me to spin the tires. I say, no because I have $1K of meat on back and don't want to waste it in parking lot.

Sometimes one has a big gear in back, there used to be a friend of mine in Corpus Christi who has a bear of a 69 Camaro. You just remember to turn off on side streets in your anything if you saw him coming down street. However, get him on SPID (south padre islande drive) and his ass was your's as he could not hit 70mph without red lining, i believe he had 5:00-5:10 rear in it, yikes, stay off highway, even homeless people with shopping carts full of belongings and two dogs would pass him.

But there are a whole slew of reasons why people only bring out their cars on Sundays, or drive 60mph, or take back roads, but can tell you the reasons are as varied as the different cars themselves.

My guess is they're old farts like most muscle car owners and they don't zip around like them young whipper snappers.  I can translate that for you younger guys , if you'd like.
Rember , we bought these cars new in 50's thru the 70's.

Got a question and I guess this is as good as place as any to ask it. As you know I had less than great breaks and very old tires on my Gremlin so in the last 4 or 5 years I never got the Gremlin over 60. Every thing in the world would pass me up on the one stretch of Interstate that has a 65 speed limit but every one drives 70 & 75, Well I always wondered when I left car shows why I never say any of them on the interstate. Well yesterday  I think I found out. I left a show and I was running a little over 70 and I passed up a couple of them. I would guess they were running about 60. I went a little further down the road and I passed up three more. My question is if you got this big ass engine in your car and your on a road that you can drive  75 or 80 why are you driving 55 to 60.  The only thing I can think of is these guys are afraid they might mess up their $50,000 show cars so the engines are more for looks than anything else. What are your thoughts.
Terry
