In 30 something years of driving AMC I have NEVER seen something like this, even with racing, usually a axle spis or something but this was whole center and axles, shims, anything in there, roaches, crawfish, it was all sheared metal. My guess is that it was 411 probably torn up when the guy moved from WA state to TX here and drove it with little or no oil in rear. When I got it, I filled it and looked fine but whined loud, mostly 45-55 then settled down, but always checked it once a month, but damage had probably been done before I got it. A lot of bearings, seals and such are indeed still available, but my mechanic told me it would be cheaper, and better, to simply replace the whole unit. I didn't think it would be difficult to find since lots of Eagles still on road, but I have had easier time finding 70 AMX rally packs (less than 1% of 70 AMXs got this) than this damned gear. The shocks mounts are staggered also on Eagles,a nd I just found out from a flock of seagulls > > http://blahblahblah.beloblog.c om/archives/flock.JPG > > that Spirit won't fit as rear is too narrow. > > Eddie Stakes > 713.464.8825 > eddiestakes@... > www.planethoustonamx.com > email volume HEAVY reply > currently 8-19 days, just call! > ----- Original Message --- -- 6ed > From: Mr. AMC > To: BaadAssGremlins@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx m > Sent: Friday, July 11, 2008 6:17 AM > Subject: [BaadAssGremlins] Eddie's Eagle Rear Problem > > > Eddie what exactly is the problem with the rear in your Eagle? I know for a fact that all the bearings and seals are still available from my local Non-Chain auto parts store for the AMC 15 rear. Although not cheap never the less the are still available. I believe the spring perches are different from the Spirit and Eagle. The Eagle perches being on top of the axel while the Spirits are below the Axle. > "Doc" > Here's a sugestion. 3 months is a long time not to be able to find a rear. Eapecially since most of the Eagles were probably sold in the rust belt. Since you don't need the 4 wheel drive disconnect the front axel and find an 8 3/4" Mopar rear. Cut of the spring mounts from the Eagle rear and weld them on the Mopar axel. The better gear ratio will probably give you a little more pep and still with the 4 cyl. give you good gas milage.
