On the bolts, if it is the exhaust manifold bolts, I usually tighten them when engine is warm, easier to turn. Get a spray bottle and spary around to see where vacuum leak is. Something else worth mentioning.....on a six, I have had a number of AMC-six, mostly 74-up with I believe Carter carb, the screws that hold it together come loose from vibration. There should be several screws on it, some easy to get to from top, other not easy to get to, but see if loose if loose, might be the problem, can't tell you how many times I have had to tighten the carb upper to lower this way!

Here is a great photo looking almost straight down, two screws are actually visible:

Well, with everyone's help, we got the Pacer back together and fired it up. Unfortunately, there is a vacuum leak around the base of the carb and another at the rear of the intake manifold. We'll let it cool for the night and try to torque the bolts tomorrow. Hope that works. As Popeye would say, "Me thinks the manifold is warped." We doubled up on the gaskets as per instructions, but we'll see! Thanks again to all.
What a great bunch of guys!
