$600 will buy you two lap dances and three Henikens at a strip joint and
usually a promise to go home with you at end of night. $600 for a reprodcution
grill would not be bad. While I have not followed this thread, remember a few
years ago a company that makes Mopar and other classic grills was going to do a
70 AMX grill. They wanted $450 each and 250 people to sign up, that is $112,500.
A NOS 70 AMX grill at the time was still under $1200. Now they are easily over
$1500 and can sail up to $2500.
Yes there were 122,844 73 Gremlins made as opposed to 4116 1970 AMXs. But
how many are left, and of those, how many people would be willing to spend say
$300-$600 for a good, quality reproduction Gremlin 70-73 grill? Would you make
your money back? This is what happened to the 70 AMX grill. I was cynical and
said on the old amxfiles it would not happen, and broke down how many 70 AMXs
probably left, how many people want to restore one and how many would be willing
to pay $450 for a brand new grill. some called me to task and I said I would
happily buy 10. Unfortunately after a year the company (it's on my website,
can't remember the name!) gave back all deposits as only.......31......people
put money where mouth is.
I say to whoever is considering reproducing a early Gremlin grill. First
don't go by what shit sells for on ebay. Call major vendors and talk to them and
see what they think, some might be willing to go in on the project. Find out if
market, saturate the national aMC rags and websites letting everyone know you
are consideirng this and maybe put together a list of interested parties, this
will hopefully give you a idea on whether or not to go thru with
project.
Your numbers, the more you make the cheaper it gets. If you do a run of 100
it will be more expensive than a run of 500 for instance, but then again, are
there 500 early Gremlisn out there people would be willing to drop $X$ amoun on
just a grill? The owner of this group Bart says below he won't while above
it Davis mentions ebay and what one might sell for. Two sides from two
Gremlin owners.
One more thing here, Davis mentions 70 AMX grill prices. You can still find
them NOS at national AMC meets for $1500-$1800. Again, if you read some OLD
FILES on my site, you will see me making like Madame Cleo predicting shit like
this back in......1987. Some heeded it, others seemed to think we have this
bottomless pit of AMC NOS and used stuff.
We don't.
And for those who wish to improve the quality of their car and restoration,
again, the long one waits the more expensive the few remaining items get. Then
unobtainium. 70 AMX, everyone who cotnacts me wants same crap for
instance:
grill
ram air
dash overlays
rocker moldings
rim blow steering wheel
back up light
Luckily the ram air has now been completely reproduced (except actuator)
and can be had for about $500, the dash overlays have also been reproduced and
can also be had for under $1K, and who would have thought the Rally Pack gauges
would have ever been made, wow! But that is only 2 of 6 items I mention. The
other 4 have low possibilities.
Not trying to discourage anyone either as if you do go thru with this, I
would be more than happy to be cheerleader on my website for you to try to
help you move them even thuogh I have no Gremlins here.
Rosa mentions dropping the first few on ebay. I agree highly and at no
reserve.
Kevin mentions Herr Benz (DCX). No they would not get upset, and they only
tend to concentrate on bigger fish. The Gremlin TOYS and DIECASTS had to get
permission as it is AMC whihc is owned by DamlierChrysler and they own the
trademarks, and of course the copyright, which the boxes have AMC logo. What you
would be doing is what a ton of other people myself included do. The grill is
unique and does not say AMC, Gremlin or anything. Think about it. Since ebay
mentioned here go over there and look at the 2586 items under a search for
AMC. You have key fobs, spring retainers, books, weatherstrips, carpet kits,
stripe kits, pistons, gaskets, rather endless list of stuff.
No, no one wants DCX up their ass, but rare something like that happens
although I understand one major vendor in Ohio recently got a letter, but then
DCX realized small fish so move on. They can go catch Asian reproing complete
front end kits for Mopars, that is big fish. Anyhows, good luck with the
project, seems like lots of interest so far, but again, do your research first
to see why supply and demand is. Can't tell you how many times I have sunk
X amount of $ into something and watch it fly off shelves, and others that
I get stuck with although lots of internet chatter!
