RE: [BaadAssGremlins] Re: Myth Busters ... Pinto fires / recall

Joe,

The difference here is that while AMC jumped on the fix immediately in
late 1970 (corporate responsibility), Ford denied the problem from
1970-1976, then redesigned the car for 1977, and did not recall the
'70-'76 cars until mid- 1978...and by then, their reputation had been
destroyed (along with a few hundred lives that would NOT have ended had
Ford made a $5.08-per-car design change at the start). It was a mistake
at first. Ford's own pre-production tests showed the danger, and they
chose to save the five bucks.
At that point, it wasn't a mistake anymore- it was negligence and
outright conspiracy.

As for how bad Pintos were hit, tests showed the ruptures and fires
happening in impacts of just 25mph. The design mistake isn't the issue.
Everybody makes mistakes. It's the denials for 8 years as people kept
dying.

See:

(If you want to defend Ford, the Crown Victoria police car fires are a
better choice...those were impacts in the 70mph range...just about every
car will lose its fuel tank in those crashes. Tests showed the Chevy
Caprices performed exactly the same.)

Note: In case you might believe Pinto taught Ford a lesson, check out
the Explorer...

Ford OWNS Volvo, yet Volvo argued fiercely with Ford over this issue, to
Ford's embarrassment. Did they fix the issue? Nope...they just sealed
the documents of the argument.

Corporate greed never ends.

JOHN...NOT trying to argue. BUT i worked at a FORD dealership for 15
years, staring wayyyy back in the 1970's. . WE replaced ALOT of
filler necks on the Pintos. Recall by FORD. All you had to do was
uinstall a LONGER neck that went deeper into the tank. Did ANYONE
ever saee how BADLY the poor PINTO was smashed by the truck???? The
girls would have died anyway. NOW..i'm NOT saying that it should have
burned...BUT when a car is smashed clear into the rear seat
area...HMMM!!
