Repairing the door jam striker plate mounting "my way" looks factory if
you make a nice plate with rounded edges and the rivet mounting holes
are nice and even. It also makes for a nice looking job if you paint the
plate and the rivets the door jam color. I also did it on the pass side
too even though it didn't need it. The ones on my yellow car are still
fine after 25 years. I didn't do a hack job as you and I probably have
seen on many other AMC's. To repair these with out seeing the plate you
would have to drill out the spot welds on the channel that holds the
floating nut inside the door pillar, weld in the plate and weld up the
holes and than weld the channel with the floating nut to the plate,
grind and fill and then paint the door pillar. Sorry way to much work
for me on somthing "I" will only see for a second when I get in the car.
It had a large 3-4" washer with smaller ones on it to hold the striker
bolt on when I got the car. Now that was ugly and a hack job. Mine is
invisible to all but the purist. Since this is no 100 point resto I am
pleased with the job.

Well, it's not perfect but repairable. The drivers door striker has been repaired 'your way' but I guess that's ok for my wife. No rust in the wheelwells or the doors, no hloes in the floor (but I haven't gotten' my fat a$$ under it yet) exhaust has a leak just in front of the muffler (not at the manifold) and the tranny has a small drip. Going to need the door glass outer 'fuzzies' because these are totaly gone and if not fixed right away these 'nice' doors won't last long around here. Doc, I just noticed yesterday the sticker on the windshield that says Fort Sill, so I can assume it belonged to a military person. Looks like all rubber under the hood has been changed and the rubber lines in the brake system will be replaced BEFORE I let her drive it. I will clean and repack all bearings and I've already recvd a trans filter kit from my non-Auotzone (you know what I mean) parts store with a new pan gasket in it (as this was one thing the previous owner informed me about). I had him make a list of everything he knew was 'wrong' since he couldn't (wouldn't) furnish me with any past repair/maintanence receipts. He was very honest with me and even 'showed off' his '73 Black/orange stripe    V-8 Gremlin X he's been working on for the past couple of years. I invited him to check 'US' out here @ BAG.    Gary

Congrats on finding and buying the new car. Did the seller say why it
was such a low mileage car? Everybody seems to love them low mileage
original little old lady cars so to speak. The problem usually is
everything made of rubber is shot. The grease in wheel bearings is hard
and the crankcase is full of sludge rubber brake lines are rotted and
cracked. I am sure you will give it more than a casual check over Gary.
You wouldn't want to turn the wife off after just showing some interest
after 20 years by the car breaking down. I always had problems with
little old lady cars. My son has also. Now my story ;-) I gave my
fathers last new car to my son 2 years ago. He bought it in sept 84 and
died in feb 86. He put 7,000 miles on it. From 86 till 2003 my mother
put 3,000 miles on it. I made sure it was serviced every 6 months. When
I gave it to my son and he started using it regularly instead of his
Javelin. You name it and he had a problem with it. Before you know it he
had almost 1,500$ in repairs and that included replacing the original
tires. Them low mileage original cars are not all they are cracked up to
be sometimes. It takes some real work to make them dependable drivers.
Is that car yellow Gary? E9 paint code?
