What might an electric fuel pump do for me? Or will it make matters worse?

No as a matter of fact a Holley blue pump and regulator would help your fuel prob out.mount the pump towards the rear by the tank and the regulator by your carb. i never dug mechanical fuel pumps.
Bart

What i say that was funny?i mounted my fuel pump towards the back on the subframe near my fuel cell and routed the line to the regulator that is by the carb.

look at this pic and you'll see the regulator mounted near the carb on my friends 74 Gremlin

chuckle away it works for us
