| My suggestion would be adding a pair of electric fans also. I have those on
just about every V8 AMC I own, you can buy good used ones off Hyundais at
junkyards, the junkyards are full of Hyundais, Toyotas, Hondas, and other 90s
ilk, and most have little electric fans on the radiators, many have not one, but
two. I like the two fans, not one big one. You can buy a big electric fan at any
auto parts store for unsually under $30 new. But it makes a big difference under
hood temps, especially sitting in Houston traffic, which sometimes moves. I'll
watch the temp rise to 200-220 degrees on a regular Houston summer day, under
the hood, and then flip on the fan togle switch and watch it quickly drop back
down to 160-170 degrees. I have had trouble starting the 71 SC/360 a few times because the headers
are close to the starter. Actually I have never seen any set of headers that
don't sit away from the starters. And the problem with that is it heats up the
armature in the starter. So while it might be great cold start, even if you stop
and run into a store to grab a soda, if it sits, not running, for 5+ minutes, it
will go rrr.....rrrrrrrrrrr.....rrrrrrrrr, (all together now, lets hear you like
on that damned Sesame Strret crap I was just watching, today special letter is
R) but car simply won't start as it gets hotter under there if it sits after you
turn it off. I have poured Gatorade on the starter to cool it off before, but
Gatorade is not cheap. And the looks you get from others is well, strange, as
first, you are driving a AMC. Secondly it looks like to run it on Gatorade.
Might be cheaper than gas now though. Go try some of those fans, they are cheap,
expendable, put a temp gauge in car also to monitor progress this summer, happy
driving.
