Was there powder coating back in 1977? The reason I ask is that I just
got a call from the guy that is soda blasting the rear window louver for
my orange Hornet. It was rattle can painted over the original yellow
finish and I wanted to have it non-chemically stripped down to the bare
alumium. He told me he had a hell of a time doing it because the
original finish was powder coat. I assumed it was either baked enamel or
a poly paint of some kind because from past experience I know it is a
tough finish. All I know is he said it took twice the time he figured
because he didn't want to increase the pressure and damage the aluminum.
Weather permitting he will drop it off between tomorrow and friday. The
roads are one sheet of ice here today in lower N.Y. Also the estimated
price has doubled and then some going from 175$ to 372$ (OUCH) But as
long as it is done properly I will just pay it. Last month I spent 500$
on the car for materials including 225$ for a complete interior and
exterior detailing. It is now in the upholstery shop for the seats to be
done so there will be another 900$-1,500$. I will soon have around
15,000$ in this 500$ 99% rust free car I bought a little over 2 years
ago.
