Title: Re: [BaadAssGremlins] What is an orphan...
The term orphan is also used to describe a child abandoned by his mother at birth. It was not unusual for a young girl/woman to suddenly lose weight, and a child appear on the church steps in a basket. In the days before legal abortion and AFDC welfare the mother really didn't have many alternatives. I was one of those babies. On February 4, 1941 I was found in a cardboard box inside the front door of the Methodist Church in Thedford, Nebraska. Of course, I didn't find out about this until I was in my twenties. This type of orphan would fit Corvair, Olds, DeSoto, Plymouth, etc.
Having the parent(s) dead does not necessarily make a child and orphan. Both of my wife's parents are dead, but that does not make her an orphan. But some children become orphans when their parents die in a war or natural disaster. AMCs, Studebakers, Packards, would be like this type of orphan.
In automobiles, the term orphan is commonly used to describe any make that is relatively common and well remembered, but no longer being made. A Nash, Gremlin, Eagle is an orphan. A Jeffrey or Maxwell or Dort is just an old car that they made a long time ago, but who knows where or when...hey! nice title for a song!

Or how about this. The Eagle Premiere (which was an AMC design) sold from 1988-1992  (also as the Dodge Monaco) was BORN  after its parent AMC died!!!

My understanding of the term orphan is not the mode being discontinued
like a Falcon or a Corvair but the manufacturer Ford or Chevy going out
of business. The most recent in my mind is Plymouth & Olds. It is
amazing how the media can pass on such misinformation to the general
public and the average Joe
doesn't know any better. Even on TV I have seen some so called
automotive experts spout stupid false hoods.

Subject: [BaadAssGremlins] Orphan cars

There was an article about orphan cars in yesterday paper. It was an AP article so some of you might have seen it too. I was expecting to read about AMC's, Studebakers and the like. It did mention them but a whole lot of the article was about Falcons and Corviers. I thought orphan cars the manufactors were no longer in existance. According to this thing any car that was no longer made was an orphan car. That would mean my Cougar is an orphan. What do you guys think.
