I bought some high temperature teflon braided tubing.  Its supposed to be flame resistant up to 400 degrees F.
 
It was pretty expensive at $8CDN/FT (I only bought 2 ft) but well worth it insteadof buying shifter cable after shifter cable...
 
Any industrial rubber supplier should have something like it.

Apparently guys use it for fuel line shielding, spark plug shielding, etc.

Where are you getting that heat shielding for the shifter cable? I need some for my project. Went thru 3 cables already!
 A 401 and you didn't go n get it ? I think I am gonna faint.
