First thing you need to remember is that the fit of the ball joint stud into the lower knuckle is TAPERED. Don't waste your time using the fork method. Once you have loosened the retaining nut, back it off until the top of the nut is flush with the top of the stud. Now, get a big hammer and strike it as hard as you can from the side so that it impacts/hits the side of the knuckle. It may take a couple of good whacks, but it pop loose. The nut will keep it from flying off. This method will work on any of the steering or ball joint connections.
