1971 Gremlin Question

The other day I was driving around in my 70 gremlin and spotted a 71 gremlin. I chatted with the fella that owns it and he is thinking of selling it. It needs alot of work to restore to original and I was thinking of buying it and making a hot rod outof it.
My question is this.....
To keep it street legal, but very fast..........
What motor could I put it?
What tranny is best?
Rear end?
Suspension?
etc..
