Hey Doc,
When has building anything AMC been easy?

Surpri se Surprise my 3 3/8" Autometer tac came yesterday afternoon. I ordered it 11am thursday and it came 3pm sat. It seems no matter what I do on this car I have to tweek everything a tad to fit. In the 3-4 years since I install the tac in my other Hornet they made some changes on the latest one, some good some not so good. The not so good one is that they made the tac bezel bigger although the face is the same. This is an in mount dash style tac. I mounted the one in the other car from behind in the clocks spot with a special bracket I made makeing the dash look factory. It fit perfectly in the clock hole with no problem. The new bezel design won't fit causeing me to have to grind the back of the gauge panel so it fits. This is not somthing you want to do with a gauge panel that you have spent 30 hours on and is completely painted and ready to install. Fortunately I have a small battery powered Sears Dremil and an assortment of stones I use for my model building that I am useing on it. After 1 1/2 hours of gentle grinding it almost fits. Today is another day. They also moved the mounting studs on the back of the tac which will make makeing a mounting bracket a real challenge. Can't anything be easy? All this was after I had installed the new chrome remote drivers door mirror and it touches the glass when you almost have the window rolled up. I saw that with the old mirror and just thought it was because the head of the mirror was loose. It is missing the outside window sweep which may be part of the problem. I have 2 new ones so I will replace the missing one today and re-adjust the glass and hope that cures the problem. I am also makeing a thicker gasket for where the mirror base screws to the door. This morning I am going to my freinds house to look at his step daughters Gremlin, it has a factory pass side mirror so I can measure it's position so I can drill the holes and properly mount mine. Hopefully early this week I will be able to get the new glass made for the mirror and have it on the c! ar. Afte r looking at the new chrome one versus the painted one I like the chrome one better. It's going to be another nice day weather wise today.
