Re: 904 & 727s

Maybe the fellows at the speed shop gave me a big line of poo to 'upsell' me something, I don't know, as I don't do trannies, just know what I wanted and had $$$ which makes people especially salesmen, do strange things! Davis, thanks for clearing that up, never too old to learn something! Oh, forgot to mention that my Rebel sports a LAPD 401 in it, didn't mention the engine size, but it is hooked up to a 904, and SOB even at 127,000 miles on it now, lights them up!

The valve bodies are the same between the two, The shift kits fit both so they are the same price. Rebuild kits are the same price also. As I said previously the 904 is a weaker tranny but it has a lower 1st gear. however that gear will swap with the 727. So the best thing would be to put the low 1st gear out of the 904 into the 727 and you have a bullet proof low end tranny.

One thing I want to mention here, while both the 727 and 904 are really nice trannies, and for the most part, indestructable, my personal choice is the 904 over the 727. It has a great low end, and some items like shift kits are 1/2 the price of 727 items. Either way you won't go wrong, my 72 AMX here had a original 727 behindthe 360 and I put a shift kit in it, darned thing would chirp tires at 70mph. And not a easy thing to do with 15" Machine rims on it. On the other hand my 68 Rebel convertible 'Machine' has a 904 behind that LAPD interceptor, over 127,000 miles on it now, again, I simply like the great low end power of the 904. Good luck whatever your decision.
