Including the gas cap?

I acquired my 1974 'complete' Gremlin for $25...well almost
complete...no keys and the gas cap is locked! I had a locksmith over
today who could not get the gas cap open by picking it and I did not
want it drilled (yet). Just wondering about the key set to this car
as I am going to have to have all new locks & keys done.

Thanks for the info. Terry & Doc

Ok,This doesn't make sense, so i have to ask....On a
model 20 rearend...WHY the heck are the axles
different length, from posi and non posi ? I was just
told by a MUCH MORE knowledgible AMCer than me, that
this was true. What the HE$%^^%$?? Guess i'm just used
to messing with old 9" ford rear ends for years. They
are sturdy and simple!! I had just bought a nice used
twin grip unit and 3:54 gears to put in a 69 Javelin
axle assy that "WAS" going to go into my 72 Gremlin.
I've had the axle assy for awhile.Any one want to buy
it??...3:54 gears also. I'll probably look for a 9" or
Mopar 8 3/4. Thanks to anyone who can make sense of
this, Joe

You should've bought a complte rear with the posi,i too tried the piece by piece route and ended up with a SC/Rambler rear housing and i never got all the stuff needed for it so i gave up sold it and bought a complete 69 AMX rear with welded axle tubes,Moser one piece axles, new brakes and new Richmond 4.56 gears the whole thing for 500$ i lucked out buying from my friend as it was worth well over 1000$ .It was in my buddies 74 Gremlin after he decided to back halve his gremlin going with a Chassis Enginering 9 inch ford narrowed rear.

The key for the gas gap is a different style from the other keys. Is the gas
gap an "after market" or one of the "Gremmie man" type? Good luck with the
locksmith.

Is it a locking AMC Gremlin gas cap? Is that why you just didn't have it
drilled out? A way to see what kind of key it takes try using an AMC
trunk and ignition key. If one fits you know it takes an AMC key if not
then you have a starting point. I find it hard to believe a competent
locksmith could not remove it.

Kennedy American lists complete sets including the rear section for 229$
for 70-78 Gremlin's. I am sure other AMC venders offer carpet. I know
South Alamo AMC offers carpet for Hornets for the same price as Kennedy
so they probably have it for Gremlin's too. I would not be surprised if
they both don't use the same supplier. You can also specify loop or

My 74 had a seperate, smaller key for the gas cap and the new/used one I bought was keyed by my locksmith with no problem. I agree with 'Doc' One key for doors and Ignition and one for hatch and glove box.

I haven't accomplished much in the last week. It took 3 days to get the
bracket made that I needed so I could mount the seat belt interlock
bypass relay and the horn relay and mount the ballast resister for the
super coil off of the pass side spring tower. I needed to move them
because I need the room on the fender well to mount the Acell super
coil. I also have to move the starter solenoid lower on the fender well
so I can mount the remote battery cut off solenoid too. I had to tweak
the bracket to fit to my satisfaction and had it bead blasted and still
have sand and to paint it. That is about all I can do as my back went
out friday. It usually does this every 1-1 1/2 years for no reason other
than just to let me know I am still alive. Boy I am sure glad I got them
bucket seats installed in the orange car, that broken bench seat that
was in there would make it impossible to drive the car with my back in
this condition and the drivers bucket in the yellow car is not in too
good a shape either. . Have a good day all.

When I did my rear swap, I got a model 20 peg leg from a concord wagon and then swapped out the carrier with a "twin Grip" one from a javelin. Easy as pie.

I should clarify my post. It is the same old Gremlin that needs lock
service. When I bought it in January, the lady told me, "if it has
keys, they will be in the ashtray". Unfortunately, it had NO ashtray
and NO keys. The locksmith was working on my house locks yesterday
when I asked him if he could get the locked gas cap off. He tried to
pick it open but the pins are rusted and hard to move. WD-40 did not
even help. He offered to drill it out, but that would have cost me
extra, it had started raining, and I needed my house done first. -Lu-

Chances are the "bidding" got up that high as they had family and friends
"bidding" on it. Shill bidding or pad bidding, which is illegal on ebay but
happens more times thant not. That's one reason, if not THE reason why I
always tell people never use ebay as a market guide. That is a $500-$850 car
mentioned below, hopefully someone will step up to buy it but for $2000 you
can do a hell of a lot better.

Sadly however, shilling is widespread on ebay. Here are the rules although
rarely anyone caught:

I am just as shocked as you are, but it is nice to know that a rusty
old knocking AMC can command that much money! *snicker* I agree with
Doc that it is around a $500 - $700 car max. There is just not enough
interest or available parts to support much more. I'm glad that
someone feels it worthy, although I would (and could) spend my money
on an AMC *whatever model* in better condition for that amount of
money. It gives me the idea that I need to sell my '74 Gremlin body
and find something better to stick this built 360 inside especially
if it will go for that much money! LOL -Lu-

Subject: Re: parts, cannibalism, door tags, ect....(was Hornet X on ebay)

What John mentions below is covered heavily on my website, it is the '70 AMX
theory' whereas the sum of parts is worth more than the car whole sometimes,
many times. A case in point is the fellow a few months ago who bought three
rustfree 68-69 AMXs up in the pacific northwest, for $1500. That is $500 per
car.
Hoods $900-$1200
1/4 panels $750-$1350 per side
fenders $250/cheap-$400/high
door glass $250-$350 per side
windshields $100/cheap-$400/high (depending on date coded)
trunklids $150
Go Pack gauges $150/cheap-$300/high
Ya'll quickly see where this is going, suddenly someone has 5X-8X+ his
original 'investment' never caring about possibly selling the car whole for
$1500 to those wishing for a chance at a rare, rustfree, almost 40 year old
obsolete vehicle. The $$$ kicks in high gear.

I can't speak for Hornets, as they share a lot more parts between 70-88
Gre/Hor/Conc/Spir/Eagl Series than do the 68-74 Jav/AMX Series. However,
there is less repro stuff available for the 70-88 series than for the 68-74
series. And both are equally opportunity to salvage and junkyards where
sadly, the well has run dry due to either shitty enviromental regulations
or.........lack of INTEREST. It's easy to sit behind a keyboard and go "me
too!" or "wow! I'll buy that!" or "I *would have* given twice that amount in
a heartbeat!" But like the car folk who approach you at a convience store,
or cruise night and say "if you ever want to sell that vehicle, give me a
call!!" nowhere to be found and couldn't afford bubble gum if free. Beyond
cynical as I drag up my 294th AMC (no one wanted it, headed to the crusher,
loaded with great salvagable parts hopefully SOMEONE needs out there) it is
extremely frustrating sometimes, no, all the time, to see crap like this day
in and out.

When you look at your AMC (insert model here) a majority of what you see
will never be made again. From the whole stamping of sheetmetal, to glass,
stainless, soft/hard interior moldings, chrome, grills and tailights, rims,
I can keep going but my point is made. You can read more under 'altered
amcs' on my website under 'parts' file.

This is not to discourage anyone from attempting to buy, and fix up AMC. But
every day that passes, the clock keeps ticking, and that sand keeps dropping
in the hourglass, Holy Batmember Batman! I can hear that festering boil in
tights Robin yell as the Penguin laughs hysterically in the background.
Batman! When the sand in the giant hourglass is out, we have reached zero
hour and there are no parts cars or salvagable parts left. So the
cannibalism is rampant, but it always has been with AMC.

I could tell a story about a brand new 68 Ambassador SST my dad was
broadsided in on his way to deliver it, the lady ran off who hit him, the
Ambassador rolled over twice but dad was beat up but ok. The Ambassador was
towed back to the dealership, All American Motors, in Corpus Christi, TX,
where after adjusters left, it was cannibalized by the dealership, nothing
was left, wiring harness, rear end, even 1/4 panel (on good side) was
surgically removed at factory seams. So the dealership got the insurance and
also a massive parts bonanza....on a car that had less than 100 miles on it.

Anyhows, some of the stuff John mentions below is penny ante and can't give
away. Other items he mentions on the ebay Hornet are in demand. It's up to
those who may need the items to not RM out, or to do without. I may add that
a title for a AMX, with VIN can fetch up to $500. Also a door tag. I have
someone who emails me once a year, but more so in the last several months
wanting to to pay $600 for a 69 AMX Big Bad Green with tan interior door tag
in good shape. I told him only 286 BBG AMXs made in 69, and my estimate is
that 30 exist. If that. I also mentioned to him that you can buy new door
tags, correct reverse stamped, from Data Tags on my vendors list.
http://www.datatags.com/
Not cheap....but the next time some of you are walking around a AMC
National, and are drooling or salivating over some of the showcars,
especially the high dollar concourse ones, look at the door tags. Good
chance this is where it came from!

Sorry for long post, got 169 more emails to get to.

I still say $1000 is the mark. Look around at the
parts values out there. These numbers may be high
to you or low, depending on your own finances and
beliefs. But these numbers will happen when the ad
is placed- someone ELSE will pay it, and then that's
the value.

V8 crossmember & mounts: $300
V8 front springs: $50
V8 sway bar: $50
V8 rear axle: $200
V8 Title and tags: To some, this is important. I
know I look for 'correct' numbers at shows. If
  I see a 360 in a car whose VIN indicates a 258,
I consider the car 'something less' than a 'true'
V8 car. Judges clearly have to consider it, too.
It may be illegal and immoral to swap the numbers,
but then, it is done, and it's rarely detected.
Thus, they have a value, too. I'd say $100 is
  certainly doable.

Good 904 trans: $100
Rebuildable, running 304: $100
4 14" Rally wheels: $200
Good windshield: $75
Various Black Interior Pieces: $100 or more
Levis seats: $150?
Good hood: $50
Good grille: $40
Good front bumper: $40
Good doors: $75/pr

We're well over $1500 so far, and there's a lot of
car left.

John

Hey, thought some of you would get a kick out of this, this piece of fine
crap is finally out of my yard, actually was stashed on the side of the
house where no one could see it while I parted it out. But it found a new
home in NC. Still had the 390V8 in it, I told the fellow who bought it he
would have to take the whole car. The hood shows how rusty the rest of it
was also. Not one salvagable piece of sheetmetal on this car, it was a coast
car. He got a free 3:54 twin grip ($350) free torque links ($100/pair) free
front sway ($50) free rally rims, (UGH!) the front bumper you could put your
finger thru also. That's free. The fenders are great 'patch panels, and yes,
the V8 cromember was left in there. Nothign else, the seats and woodgrain
steering wheel were wires.

It has been a real long time, since the 70s, where I got a few cans of $1
store paint and had some fun with a piece of crap like this on it's way out
of here. So I got it ready for transport, and figuring everyone would vomit
in disgust as it rolled on towards the easty coast, throwing off panels of
rust and abestos padding and carpet, I took my trusty paint cans to it a day
before Ivan hit us, which was nothing more than a rainstorm, not what hit
Florida and Bama then circled up to Jersey and back out and around,
strangest thing (beside my paint job) you ever seen.

So here in all it's magnificent glory is my former 68 AMX, 390, 4 spd.
Sadly, this car started it's life as a Laredo Tan ext/Red int car, one of
only TWO I have ever seen in that color combination since 1968.
