Re: [AMC-list] Question on HEI conversion on 304 AMC

There were a couple electronic ignitions used.

Presto-no-lite (a little joke there about how they suddenly cut out. It's the one with a plastic vacuum advance) BID that had a factory fix of cutting off the connector and soldering the wires together. I upgraded the spark on mine with a late '70's Dodge ignition coil and marine cap with good wires. (35,000 volts IIRC)
Motorcraft Duraspark II was used late '77 up and it can be upgraded with the Team Rush TFI parts list to 50,000 volts.
The cam and dist gear are wear matched so you want to keep them together or they self destruct.
There is also FSJnetwork.com and IFSJA.org websites for full size jeeps (I currently own 2 '80s J10s, 2 Jeep Comanches, a '68 Travelall, an IH Loadstar 1800 and an Eagle wagon daily driver and two of my kids have Jtrucks and MJs too)

Hi All,
I haven't posted here before but have been reading past post for sometime. they have really helped with two of my project vehicle's.

I'm a retired master journeyman mechanic,so I do ok with most my jeep project's issues but find advice from others "trial & Error" most helpful.

So here is what I have and what we want to do.

We have a 63' Gladiator pick-up with a early done power-trane swap( done long before I acquired it)
It's has a early AMC 71' 304 with what I believe is a later(maybe 75') AMC electronic Ignition control unit and distributor.
I would not call it a cleanly done distributor swap but looks to have worked all these years, but definitely out dated.

We want to swap in a aftermarket GM style HEI hybrid distributor.
I'm am liking the jump in coil voltage from 20,000V to the 50,000V the GM offers and reduction wiring.

We're seeing some earlier online "posted issues" with shortened cam gear life after doing this conversion, so my question is has anyone here had a bad experience in doing this conversion?

If so where you using one of the newer designed units now on the market with the improved(AMC patterned)designed Distributor gear?

If you have done this conversion with success what unit did you use?

Our hope is that this conversion should not only improve reliability (a big issue here in Idaho high country) but help with mileage and give a slight! bit of extra HP...was this anyone's experience?

you have a great group here...thanks in advance.
