The choke adjustment won't affect the other carb adjustments. Sounds like
you don't have the choke adjusted correctly -- not enough choke when cold.
Loosen the screws around the black cap (choke control, with the wire
running to it) and turn a little toward rich.

What you really need to do is go out on a "cold" morning and pull the air
cleaner off. Turn the switch on but don't start the engine. Look at the
choke. If it's full open that's the problem. Turn the choke (as above)
until the choke is 1/3 open (2/3 closed). Make sure power is on! In fact,
you might want to pull the power wire and make sure you have 12V on it.
Don't use a test light, use a volt meter. +/- 1V shouldn't matter though
(11-13V). If no power that might be the problem there (with switch on, of
course). Once you set the choke see if it starts and runs better.

The FIRST thing you do when starting cold is turn the switch on (ignition
on, red lights on dash are on) but don't start. Press your foot ONCE all
the way to the floor then release. That sets the fast idle and choke. THEN
start WITHOUT touching the gas pedal. If the choke is working right it
should start right up and be at fast idle (1000-1200 rpm). After a few
seconds running fast tap the gas pedal, about half way down should be
enough. If the engine has warmed enough the fast will cut off, if not it
should still slow down a bit.If you haven't been doing this try that
before adjusting the choke.

If the new choke setting works okay drive the car until it's fully warmed
up (15 minutes or more). Then with the engine still running pop the hood
and pull the breather off. Look at the choke blade. It should be fully
open, or at least 3/4 open (slightly off vertical is okay). If not, adjust
again until it's almost vertical. You might have to go back and forth
between cold and hot a couple times until you get a setting that works
well. Try this and check the voltage on the electric choke line before
replacing anything.

AMC 1981 Spirit 6 cyl 258 with Carter BBD 8302S carburetor

Car has trouble when cold (dies) but runs great once warm.  This is
southern California, so "cold" is 48F at the coldest and right about
50F first thing in the morning.  Once run a bit it's good all day.
