You know I hadn't thought of that approach at all.

I know i the past I've taken the soffit plgs out of 291C heads and found a 
rod like thing up inside the cooling jackets.
I assumed it was there during the casting process holding the sand mold 
pieces in the correct position.
I don't recall ever seeing them inside the cooling jacket of the block.

I thought maybe it was residual casting sand making the mud too, but after 
all these years and so many flushes that
does't seem to fit either.

Maybe it is a chemical soup I'm creating?????
