Re: [AMC-list] Little update on the Classic

Good going Joe! If the gauge reads full all the time and the sending unit is working you've got a dead ground in the wire somewhere. The yellow wire runs from the tank into the trunk, I think to the back left corner of the trunk (might be front left side corner in the sedan) and has a connector there. First place I'd look is where it goes through the trunk floor. The next connector is behind the left kick-panel. I think the yellow gauge wire is in the big 8 or 10 pin connector, don't recall for sure, but the wire does run right beside that connector. If the through the trunk wire is good I'd unplug it behind the kick panel and see if the gauge doesn't go down to E. Should be on E with no connection, F with a dead ground. That will tell you if the problem is between the kickpanel connector and gauge or connector and trunk.

How does the temp gauge read though? If it reads high all the time the gauge regulator is probably bad. Overvoltage will casue the high reading too. Remember, that's a bi-metal "average" regulator -- it switches on and off fast to produce and average of 5V, not a constant 5V. If the regulator points are stuck the gauge is getting 10-12V (depending on resistance through the points) and will read high. If you have to pull the dash replace it with a steady 5V electronic regulator as per Tom's web site.

I?have driven the 64 Classic in the neighborhood and the clutch job seems to be
satisfactory so far.?? I'm trying to get it ready for the road.? It ran out of
gas on the project pad the other night which was fortunate because I have been
driving it a little in the neighborhood.? I'm glad it didn't happen there.?? The
gas gauge reads full all the time.?
